What a farce! Ruining Man Utd's title hopes is Chelsea's biggest success of the season so far

The Blues have gone from kings to kingmakers and celebrated holding Louis van Gaal's side at Stamford Bridge like a win, exemplifying just how far they've fallen

John Terry’s Chelsea career will always be defined by a 1-1 draw with Manchester United. Not this one, however.  Memories of Moscow in 2008 are slow to fade.

If another draw lives long in Chelsea’s minds, it will be for two reasons: the horrible injury Kurt Zouma seemed to suffer and the sense of schadenfreude that they dented United’s title push. That is all Chelsea can do now: damage others. They used to be the kings. Now they are the kingmakers. They have frustrated first Arsenal and now United. The biggest victories of their league season are the points they have taken off others. Manchester City, Tottenham and Leicester, who will all visit Stamford Bridge before the end of the campaign, should beware.

Yet it has come to something when Chelsea are pleased to draw at home, the place where Jose Mourinho went 77 league games unbeaten. Standards have slipped over the eight years since these teams met in a Champions League final. Principally, however, they have dropped in the last eight months when Chelsea have gone from first to 13th.

Now, in a season of sorry statistics, the one positive fact Chelsea can cling to is the reality they are on the longest undefeated run in the Premier League at the moment. Yet the more telling piece of information may be that, for the first time in 28 years, they have four consecutive draws at Stamford Bridge. It is a distinctly mixed blessing. Guus Hiddink has a drawing habit, which is an upgrade on the litany of losses at the end of Mourinho’s reign, but as Terry put it bluntly, they need to start winning. All a draw did them was take them a further point clear of Bournemouth.

Yet rather than giving the impression they were determined to win, Chelsea seemed intent on not being beaten. Ambitions have been downgraded. Hiddink is seen as the more adventurous of the senior citizens of Dutch management, Van Gaal the more controlling and defensive. This was a role reversal. Manchester United were purposeful and positive. Chelsea looked inhibited as long as the game remained goalless.

But he picked a pragmatic team, without much fantasy. A starting XI with only two flair players, in Oscar and Cesc Fabregas, played functional football. Eden Hazard was held in reserve for 54 minutes. Even when the benched Footballer of the Year was introduced, it was at Oscar’s expense. It is the obvious response with a struggling side, to shore up shop, and Chelsea lost nine of their last 15 league games under Mourinho.

While Roman Abramovich’s dream manager, Pep Guardiola, will bring the promise of beautiful football to Manchester City, his interim appointment has presided over a team with two goals in three league games. Both have come from Diego Costa, whose belated first appearance against United had a happy ending with his equaliser.

Hiddink has been on a damage-limitation exercise. The Russian owner may imagine an identity shift next season when he likely has yet another manager. Presumably his ideal side does not include both Nemanja Matic and John Obi Mikel. Solidity is a starting point, but style will be a requirement in the future.

And Terry, seemingly, will not be part of it. The 35-year-old’s post-match interview, confirming there has been no further communication with the club, suggested Chelsea are still set on putting the ‘end’ into Captain, Leader, Legend.

In the short term, however, events are contriving to make Terry seem still more important. As Zouma was stretchered off with what looked a potentially serious knee injury, the old firm of Terry and Gary Cahill were reunited. Any plans of easing the departing captain out of the team may have to be put on hold. The more immediate worry for Hiddink, as he plots a path to retirement lined with silverware, is his team can beat Manchester City in the FA Cup and Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League without the big Frenchman.

Terry’s farewell tour could be a busy affair but, barring a draw in the FA Cup, he has played his final game against United. One stands out, courtesy of the sliced spot-kick that spawned T-shirts and banners, mimicking safety warnings and reading: “Caution! John Terry.”

Now there is another sort of hazard at Stamford Bridge, and not just the substitute Eden. Chelsea showed their doggedness as they fought to extend their unbeaten run. They took conspicuous pleasure in taking a point from a team who are aiming to replace them as champions. Three more are due in west London. Yet again, Chelsea could have a say in the title race.

Chelsea 1-1 Man Utd: Late Costa strike earns champions deserved draw

The striker, who saw little of the ball elsewhere, rounded David De Gea in the 92nd minute after Jesse Lingard had given the visitors the lead on the hour mark

Diego Costa snatched an injury-time equaliser to secure Chelsea a 1-1 draw against Manchester United and preserve the Premier League champions' unbeaten run under Guus Hiddink.

Louis van Gaal described United's performances against Derby County and Stoke City as "sparkling" and his side began Sunday's game in dominant fashion at Stamford Bridge, though chances were few and far between in the first half.

Kurt Zouma was carried off on a stretcher shortly after half-time with what looked to be a serious injury to his right knee and Jesse Lingard turned home in fine style just two minutes later to put the visitors ahead.

David de Gea made a handful of superb saves to keep Chelsea at bay in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford and he frustrated Hiddink's side again, making terrific stops against Branislav Ivanovic and Cesc Fabregas in particular.

As a first Premier League win in seven over the champions for United neared, Costa pounced in the dying minutes to preserve Chelsea's unbeaten run since Jose Mourinho was sacked, which now stands at 11 games in all competitions.

United controlled the opening quarter, Michael Carrick drawing a low stop from Courtois before the Belgian superbly clawed away Anthony Martial's effort after cutting into the left channel.

The visitors kept up their pressure as Chelsea struggled to gain a foothold in possession, though De Gea had to react smartly to catch Nemanja Matic's glancing header from Willian's delivery.

Costa placed a low shot narrowly wide of the far post as Hiddink's side suddenly began to look a real threat, with Oscar then blazing over the bar from close range after being teed up by Cesar Azpilicueta.

Wayne Rooney almost turned home Matteo Darmian's drilled cross but John Terry had shouts for a penalty waved away in the final minute of the half as his shot on the turn took a slight deflection off Daley Blind's raised arm.

Rooney drew a strong save from Courtois and Martial dragged a shot narrowly wide as United began the second half back on the front foot, with the Belgian again at full stretch to keep out Lingard's curling effort.

Hiddink introduced Eden Hazard from the bench but was forced into a second substitution within a minute after Zouma had to be carried off on a stretcher after jarring his right leg when landing awkwardly near the centre circle.

Chelsea's defence was slow to settle after Gary Cahill's introduction and Lingard capitalised superbly to put United ahead, controlling Cameron Borthwick-Jackson's low cross from the left and firing into Courtois' top-left corner on the turn.

De Gea reacted brilliantly to tip Ivanovic's volley over the bar as Chelsea sought an immediate response, and the Spain international denied compatriot Fabregas with another fine save to keep the midfielder's effort out of the top corner.

United's resistance was finally worn down in the first minute of stoppage time, however, as Costa capitalised on Blind's slip to finish at the second time of asking and preserve Hiddink's unbeaten run.

Diego Costa's stoppage-time equaliser ensures the Blues remain unbeaten under Guus Hiddink, cancelling out Jesse Lingard's emphatic opener. It was a thrilling contest in the end from Stamford Bridge, really easy on the eyes, though in the end a point doesn't do much good for either side. That's all for our live coverage from London, thanks for following along - good bye!

SubstitutionJuan Manuel Mata García Ander Herrera Agüera

CHELSEA HAVE THEIR EQUALISER! They've been persistent, and it has paid off in a big way! Fabregas threads a weak ball into the area, and Blind slips which allows it to go through for Costa. The striker's first attempt is blocked by Borthwick-Jackson, which throws De Gea off, but he's able to stick with it to tap home the follow-up!

United make their second change of the evening, and there is a loud roar from the away supporters as goalscorer Jesse Lingard is withdrawn. Memphis Depay gets a brief cameo in his stead.

So poor from Willian! His free-kick is dealt with easily, but the Brazilian is afforded another chance to cause some havoc from the ensuing corner - which he flubs even worse. That will do nothing to please Hiddink. Chelsea need to produce a better end product or they're headed for a first defeat under the Dutchman.
  • 83'

    Yellow Card Chris Smalling
Smalling is booked for a deliberate handball, which awards Chelsea a glorious opportunity from a free-kick just a yard outside the left of the penalty area.

Van Gaal draws from his bench to make his first change of the match, and it sees Morgan Schneiderlin come on to provide some fresh legs in midfield, with Fellaini giving way.

Groans head throughout the ground as play is forced to be brought to a halt with Carrick down, seemingly suffering from a cramp. He pops back up after a few seconds, which does nothing to settle the rage of these Chelsea supporters.

STAT: Chelsea are on the current longest unbeaten run in the Premier League, going without a defeat in eight league matches now (W3 D5). Despite this, they still haven't recorded back-to-back wins in the league this season.
  • 74'

Great effort! Shades of the goal Rooney scored in the Manchester derby a few years back, as a ball comes into the area from Darmian, and the striker meets it with a clever overhead kick! He can't get the contact spot on, however, and it bounces wide of the near post.
  • 72'

DE GEA STILL AT IT! The Spaniard this time denies his fellow countryman, beating Fabregas' effort away at the near post. United are being pinned back in defence, barely clinging to this lead!
  • 70'

Chelsea starting to throw caution to the wind and commit bodies forward. This has been a wonderful match of football, contrary to what may have been expected at the start. United are dropping deeper in defence and the bus is starting to be parked - which will make for an unnerving finish.
  • 68'

THAT IS SPECIAL! Azpilicueta makes a determined run to keep a Chelsea attack alive inside the United penalty area, heading the ball back for Ivanovic. The right-back shows an impressive bit of skill to send a fierce half-volley at goal from close range, but somehow De Gea is able to react and knock it over the bar!

SubstitutionNemanja Matić Pedro Eliezer Rodríguez Ledesma
Chelsea make their final change of the match, and they're going for broke as Pedro comes on to replace Matic.

  • 64'

Headed behind! Willian floats a teasing delivery into the area, but Carrick is on hand to usher it behind for a corner. That's a prominent piece of defending from the veteran midfielder.
  • 63'

    Yellow Card Daley Blind
Blind barges into the back of Costa and gives an unnecessary push, just outside the penalty area. He goes into the book, but more importantly is the ensuing free-kick which presents Chelsea the chance for an immediate response.
  • 61'

    Assist Wayne Rooney
Important touch from Rooney, who gets the assist, but that was all made possible by the cross from Borthwick-Jackson.
  • 61'

    Goal Jesse Lingard
UNITED HAVE THEIR BREAKTHROUGH! What a special finish that is from Jese Lingard! Borthwick-Jackson delivers a tremendous cross in from the left, yet again, which Rooney touches into the path of the winger. Lingard takes a touch to turn Azpilicueta, before sending a venomous half-volley into the top corner while falling to ground! That is unstoppable!
  • 59'

    SubstitutionKurt Zouma Gary Cahill
Gary Cahill comes on to replace the French centre-half.
  • 59'

Hopefully this is a matter of looking worse than it actually is - but that certainly looked a terrible injury. Who knows how long it could keep him out, but based on the cringe-worthy nature of the landing, and the pain he was in, this is likely the last time we'll see Zouma on the pitch this season.
  • 57'

OH NO! This appears to be a terrible injury for Zouma, who lands very awkwardly, hyper-extending his right knee, before going down in real pain. He can be heard screaming from a mile away as the training staff rushes on to attend to him. Stamford Bridge collectively holds its breath.
  • 55'

SubstitutionOscar dos Santos Emboaba Júnior Eden Hazard
Hiddink has seen about enough, and on comes Belgian playmaker Eden Hazard. Oscar gives way, and he has not had a match to remember.
  • 54'

DOUBLE SAVE! Martial holds the ball up in the penalty are and tees up Lingard atop the box, but the winger's strike is punched aside by a diving Courtois! Pressure stays on and Rooney tries to power the ball in from a tight angle, but again the Chelsea keeper is up to the task!
  • 52'

STAT: Wayne Rooney has scored five goals in his last five Premier League appearances; more than he had managed in his previous 25 apps in the competition (4). Rooney has been involved in eight of the Red Devils last 10 league goals (five goals, three assists).
  • 50'

COURTOIS ALERT! Rooney is starting to come to life, though! The striker makes another tidy turn in attack, this time firing a surprise strike towards the near post, but the Chelsea keeper is able to dive across and get a paw to it! Lovely attacking football from United early on here.
  • 48'

First chance to the visitors! Manchester United open the second half on the front foot, and it nearly pays dividends as Mata's delightful ball over the top spots the run of Rooney, but it's just a bit too tall for the striker who fails to make clean contact with his header!
  • 46'

    Back underway at Stamford Bridge!
  •

The scoreline is what most would have expected at the interval, but it has been a much more eventful half of football than what we saw over the course of the full 90 minutes at Old Trafford. Both sides enjoyed their prolonged spells in attack, but it is Chelsea who have come closer to breaking the deadlock. Martial and Willian have been the catalysts for either side, who look at their best when the full-backs get forward and provide a bit of width.
  • 45'+1'

HALF TIME: CHELSEA 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED.
  • 45'

PENALTY APPEALS DENIED! Chelsea are refused a strong claim for a spot kick as Blind blocks Terry's effort with his arm! Oliver had a good look and decided not to give it, and there's a case to be made for both sides. The Dutchman's arm clearly got the block in, but it was also tucked close to his body. It was more there for protection, had it been dropped to his side it would have undoubtedly smacked off his neck or face.
  • 43'

That is a special cross! A delightful delivery from a talented individual, as Darmian launches a diagonal ball into the box from out wide. His delivery is low to the ground and sneaks behind the Chelsea defence and out of reach of Courtois, but neither Rooney or Martial can get on the end of it!
  • 41'

STAT: Manchester United have lost more often to Chelsea than any other opponent in the Premier League era (16 times).
  • 39'

Lingard has been a real weak spot for United going forward. The winger has offered no width at all, and is failing to assert his influence on the match. Azpilicueta has had an easy time defending the flank, which has made the Red Devils very one dimensional in attack.
  • 37'

It has been night and day in this first half from Chelsea. They started out so poorly, walking on egg shells and allowing United to pass their way around them with ease. They have since turned the corner, however, and appear to be inching ever so close to the breakthrough goal with the visitors unable to break out of their own end.
  • 35'

Needed a touch! An excellent ball forward finds Willian on the right fringe of the penalty area. The Brazilian turns Borthwick-Jackson inside out before whipping an inviting delivery across the face of goal for Oscar - but the ex-Internacional midfielder can't produce the decisive touch with Smalling draped all over him.
  • 33'

Lifted over! Excellent build-up play from the Blues! They're keeping and moving the ball around much better now. Oscar gets on the end of the latest bit of interplay inside the area, but from in close he's unable to find the top corner and kicks the advertising board in frustration.
  • 31'

STAT: Guus Hiddink led Real Betis to a 2-1 win over Louis van Gaal’s Barcelona in 2000, and managed three straight victories with AZ over PSV (also coached by the current United boss), before the two met again in December in the return fixture at Old Trafford which ended in a draw.
  • 29'

SMART SAVE! The Blues are slowly growing into the game, and win another corner. This one is met by the head of Matic at the near post, and he sends a glancing effort towards the far stick, but De Gea does well to get across and not just parry, but make the save and hold on to prevent a rebound from falling to the lurking Terry.
  • 27'

Chelsea finally win their first corner, with United having already taken nine. Fabregas' delivery is met by Costa, but his header loops over the bar off Blind. It goes unspotted by Michael Oliver and the Spanish striker charges at the referee, enraged with his decision to award a goal kick. He has to keep his cool better than that.
  • 25'

SPLENDID DELIVERY! Blind floats an excellent corner into the area, which actually lands at the feet of Fellaini. It almost catches the Belgian by surprise, as he fails to sort his footing and Chelsea are able to scramble clear. Back the other way come the Blues, and Willian displays some good hold-up play to win a free-kick.
  • 23'

Martial continues to give Ivanovic trouble on the flank. The Serbian right-back has been targeted by United in this first half, with the Frenchman and Borthwick-Jackson making strides down the left. They win another corner through Martial, and Blind's delivery is knocked behind for yet another set-piece opportunity.
  • 21'

STAT: Chelsea have drawn their last three Premier League games at Stamford Bridge. The last time they drew four in a row was between November 1987 and January 1988, but they have never done so in the history of the Premier League.
  • 19'

SUPERB STRIKE! In a near replica of his goal midweek, Martial starts at the top corner of the area, cuts onto his right and tries to pick out the far corner. He strikes it sweetly, but Courtois produces an even better save! That was a strong hand from the Belgian keeper and it had to be!
  • 17'

Willian makes a darting run through the heart of midfield to advance the ball into the final third, which gets the home fans going. He gets the ball back again near the touchline and plays Matic down the right, but the midfielder is squeezed out capably by Fellaini as it runs behind for a goal kick.
  • 15'

Chelsea need to find a way to settle themselves down and start stringing together a few passes. It has been quite the unnerving start from the hosts, while Van Gaal will have to be pleased with the sort of confidence his team have showed through the first quarter of an hour.
  • 13'

Borthwick-Jackson has been lively thus far, and is providing the best attacking threat with his crossing from the left. He wins the visitors another corner, but a few attempts from United to cross the ball in are all dealt with confidently by the hosts.
  • 11'

United up their corner count to three through the first 10 minutes, but each of which has been dealt with accordingly by Chelsea. While it's still early, this is shaping up quite similarly to the return fixture at Old Trafford where Van Gaal's side struggled mightily to find a way around the Blues bus.
  • 9'

Fabregas has dropped deeper in an attempt to provide a serviceable link between defence and attack. Chelsea have spent little time on the ball and the Spaniard needs to be the orchestrator in midfield to help change the flow and get the Blues playing on the ball.
  • 7'

STAT: Chelsea are unbeaten in their last nine matches against Manchester United across all competitions (W5 D4).
  • 5'

Manchester United enjoyed a large portion of possession in the return fixture as well, but were only able to turn it into a pair of shots on target. They will be buoyed by their performance midweek, and the intent from the Red Devils is already clear with Borthwick-Jackson and Darmian prominent on the overlap.
  • 3'

Positive start for United, who enjoy a prolonged spell of possession inside the Chelsea half. They will be searching for a victory to act as a springboard for their top four hopes, while the Blues will be hoping for something similar to avoid becoming the first defending champions to finish outside the top seven the following year.

    And we're off!
  •

As expected, Louis van Gaal has also named the same starting line-up following a convincing 3-0 victory over Stoke midweek. Wayne Rooney headlines attack, along with Anthony Martial, Juan Mata and Jese Lingard. Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick is the preferred partnership in midfield, while youngster Cameron Borthwick-Jackson keeps his place at left-back.
  •

Guus Hiddink keeps the faith following their draw at Vicarage Road, putting forth the same starting line-up. Eden Hazard is again relegated to a spot on the bench, with Diego Costa leading the lines ahead of Willian, Cesc Fabregas and Oscar. John Obi Mikel partners Nemanja Matic in midfield, while John Terry makes his first start in front of the Stamford Bridge faithful following the announcement that his contract would not be renewed at the end of this season. Alexandre Pato still isn’t match fit after joining the club on loan.

    CONFIRMED TEAM NEWS:
  •

Amidst the many intriguing storylines, one to really keep an eye on is the battle of the two Dutch managers, who add another chapter to their storied 18-year rivalry. They have gone toe-to-toe on opposite touchlines in both La Liga and the Eredivisie. Van Gaal hasn’t beat his counterpart since 1999, while the current Chelsea boss has won four of five since (D1) – though it was Hiddink who derailed the Dutch national team in European qualifying, following their successful third-place finish at the World Cup under the current Manchester United boss.
  •

Manchester United turned on the style in surprising fashion as they dismantled Stoke midweek at Old Trafford, and Louis van Gaal believes it could be the start of a revival of the club’s diminishing title hopes. While that may be a bit ambitious, what it did do is set the standard for what the club and fans should come to expect on a weekly basis. All that remains constant at this point is their need for victories in bunches – not a few impressive performances scattered throughout an accretion of lacklustre outings.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of Manchester United’s trip to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea, with both outfits hoping to replenish their fractured egos. Under Guus Hiddink, Chelsea have been stable – far from the intimidating figure of last season, but a picture of composure when the club needed it most. Confidence is being restored but, as we are coming to see, it is a slow process as the Blues try to piece together the rubble leftover from Jose Mourinho’s tenure.
