Vardy on wonder goal: Mignolet had it coming

Vardy on wonder goal: Mignolet had it coming

The England striker scored an incredible volley from long range as Premier League leaders Leicester City beat Liverpool 2-0 at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy said he spotted Simon Mignolet straying off his line throughout the victory over Liverpool before beating the Belgian with a sensational long range volley.

Vardy opened the scoring in the victory at the King Power Stadium, latching on to a Riyad Mahrez pass and letting fly from distance, lobbing Mignolet in the process.

And the England international, who scored the second goal of the game to wrap up a 2-0 win for the Premier League leaders, had anticipated such a chance would present itself during the game.

"To be honest with you I was looking all game and he was quite far off his line, so as soon as Riyad's played it through and it's bounced quite high and I've got no support, I've just took my chance and luckily its gone over the top of him," he told Sky Sports.

Asked if he had scored a better goal in his career, Vardy replied: "No, I don't [think I have] to be fair, but a goal's a goal and more importantly it's three points for the club."

Leicester remain top of the table after the win, three points clear of Manchester City, who they face at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The striker scored twice, including a wonderful long range effort, as Claudio Ranieri's men maintained their three-point lead at the top of the Premier League table

Jamie Vardy scored two goals - including a contender for goal of the season - to fire Leicester City to an impressive 2-0 win over Liverpool.

The striker's first effort was a stunning dipping volley on 60 minutes and his second, 10 minutes later, sealed a win that continues the Foxes' shock bid for the Premier League title.

Leicester are three points clear of second placed Manchester City - who beat Sunderland 1-0 on Tuesday night - and face Manuel Pellegrini's side at the Etihad this weekend.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have now only won one of their last five games in the league - conceding 13 in the process - after another disappointing performance.

Leicester made no alterations to their team, while there were eight Liverpool changes from the side that played West Ham in the FA Cup, with captain Jordan Henderson fit to start.

The visitors had most of the first-half possession, but Leicester came so close to scoring on two occasions. First, a swift counter-attack saw Shinji Okazaki find Vardy before getting on the end of the England striker's cross to head powerfully at goal from close-range.

Okazaki seemed certain to score, but Mignolet got down low to make a crucial reflex save, pushing the ball on to the crossbar and out to safety.

Mignolet was then at it again, this time to deny Riyad Mahrez after Vardy was tackled by Dejan Lovren.

The ball fell to Mahrez, who did not break his stride before unleashing a stunning, curling first-time effort from 25 yards that was only matched by a magnificent one-handed save from Mignolet to ensure it remained goalless at half-time.

Emre Can arrowed a shot just wide from 12 yards after a neat passing move and Kasper Schmeichel had to react quickly at his near post to keep out Alberto Moreno after the break.

It was a piece of individual brilliance that broke the deadlock on 60 minutes when a hopeful long pass from Mahrez found Vardy's run in a seemingly unthreatening position close towards the right channel outside of the area.

Vardy, though, displayed perfect technique to send an outstanding looping half-volley over Mignolet from fully 30 yards.

Okazaki had a penalty claim denied by referee Andre Marriner after he appeared to be brought down by Mamadou Sakho in the box, but the hosts soon got over that when Vardy made it two on 72 minutes.

After Sakho failed to head clear, Okazaki's shot deflected into the path of Vardy, who made no mistake with a convincing left-footed finish to seal another impressive victory for Ranieri's title challengers ahead of a mouthwatering trip to Manchester this weekend.

A Jamie Vardy brace, including a worldie, ensures the Foxes remain top of the Premier League as they send the Reds into mid-table obscurity. The Foxes don't need to prove themselves anymore, that much should be clear. That's all for our live coverage from the King Power, thanks for following along. Good bye!

Liverpool really have no reason to be discouraged by their performance. All in all they actually played quite well, but in the end it was just an inability to carve out clear-cut chances that proved to be their undoing - and they're hardly the first team to suffer that fate against the Foxes this season.

Liverpool are throwing caution to the wind as they desperately chase down this two-goal deficit. The Foxes have bodies back in numbers, however, and remain so compact that it's making it near impossible for the Reds to try and break them down. It's not looking good at the moment for them.

Albrighton had one of his quieter nights and is replaced by Demarai Gray, who is quickly becoming a fan favourite after arriving at the start of January.

The work rate of Mahrez, Vardy and Okazaki is just something you don't see anymore. These players don't stop running, and don't know the meaning of a lost cause, which makes life increasingly difficult on the opposition. There's no sign of them fading.

    Goal Jamie Vardy
IT'S VARDY'S PARTY! Leicester set to remain top as Vardy beats Lovren clean to get on the end of Okazaki's deflected shot and lift a wonderful finish into the top corner! The King Power erupts as the Foxes are surely in for another three points now!
  • 70'

Nearly a second! A brilliant passage of play between Okazaki and Vardy sees the Japan international into the area. He's taken to ground, but his strike partner picks up the loose ball as play continues. Vardy tries to round Mignolet and tuck it home, but the keeper is wise to it and able to interject.
  • 68'

Despite trailing by a fair bit in the possession category, Leicester continue to pose a legitimate threat on the break, and have unquestionably produced the game's best chances - and they will have more space to exploit now with the Reds starting to throw caution to the wind.
  • 66'

    SubstitutionJordan Henderson Christian Benteke Liolo
Long overdue is this switch as Christian Benteke arrives off the bench. He should help provide more of a target in the centre to help translate this possession into clear-cut opportunities. Henderson is off in his place.
  • 64'

Liverpool back to dictating possession and passing the ball around in attack, but still the Reds are struggling to create much. They are well overdue for a change. Klopp has to find a bit of a spark off the bench to try and turn this around.
  • 62'

STAT: The last team to lead the top-flight table at the start of February and not finish in the top four was Southampton in 1981-82.
  • 60'

    Assist Riyad Mahrez
Mahrez won't get much of the credit there considering the difficulty of the finish, but his ball over the top made it all possible for Vardy.
  • 60'

    Goal Jamie Vardy
OH MY WORD HOW ABOUT THAT?! Jamie Vardy sends the King Power into rapture with an absolute stunner! Even by his high standards, that is a remarkable strike from the forward, who chases down Mahrez's ball over the top and thunders a dipping volley over Mignolet and just under the bar! You can't hit them any better than that!
  • 58'

Firmino simply isn't getting the job done tonight for Liverpool. The Brazilian needs to simplify things in attack and get some shots on target. He's largely snatched at his opportunities up to this point, and it could be time for Benteke to come on.
  • 56'

Liverpool continue to camp out predominately in the Leicester end, but they're struggling to force Schmeichel into action. The keeper has his first save to make of the second half as he scurries over to his near post to turn aside a clever attempt from Moreno who tried to catch him cheating.
  • 54'

How do you like that from Mignolet? It's a stomach in your throat type of moment for the Reds as the keeper is very nonchalant in possession deep inside his box. Vardy gives chase and slides in, but Mignolet is able to produce a clever bit of skill to bypass the striker and clear his lines.
  • 52'

Despite all of Liverpool's dominance in possession, Leicester continue to pose a great threat on the counter. Mahrez just fails to play Vardy through, before moments later Okazaki sends a chipped shot onto the roof of the net. The Reds have been exposed on the break.
  • 50'

STAT: Leicester City have scored the most goals from fast-breaks this season (5) and have also had the most attempts on goal from counter attacks (18).
  • 48'

BRILLIANTLY WORKED! Great bit of interplay from the Reds, who carve apart the left flank but have to settle for a corner. Milner, Henderson and Can were all involved there, but the latter sees his strike deflected wide of the near post.
  • 46'

Back underway at the King Power!
  •

No goals to discuss at the King Power, but it certainly hasn't been for a lack of chances. The Foxes have been thwarted by the heroics of Mignolet, while the Reds have been a bit wasteful in the final third. It has been a hotly contested half that promises to carry on as such throughout the second frame with both teams unwilling to settle for less than three points.
  • 45'+1'

    HALF-TIME: LEICESTER 0-0 LIVERPOOL.
  • 45'

There will be just one minute added on at the end of this first half.
  • 43'

The tempo has slowed a bit as we rapidly approach the interval. The visitors are attempting to build more patiently in attack, while keeping themselves organised to ensure not to be caught on the break. Half-time should provide these players with the breather they so desperately need.
  • 41'

STAT: Mahrez has been involved in more goals than any other Premier League player so far this season (21 – 13 goals, eight assists). No Liverpool player has reached double figures in terms of Premier League goal involvement this season, with Roberto Firmino topping the team at nine (five goals, four assists).
  • 39'

It's Leicester's turn to pile on the pressure and they are doing so accordingly. Simpson does well to keep the ball on the flank before rolling Drinkwater through near the byline. The midfielder tries to pull it back for Okazaki, but Sakho reads it well to slide in and intervene.
  • 37'

SENSATIONAL HIT! Vardy and Okazaki link-up encouragingly as they burst forward into attack. Lovren intervenes with a strong challenge, but the ball only comes as far as Mahrez, who curls an absolutely wonderful first-time strike towards the far top corner. Mignolet reacts so well, however, diving across to get a hand to it!
  • 35'

CLOSE! Lovely footwork from Lallana as he pull some trickery inside the area before plucking the ball out of his magic feet to deliver a cross towards Henderson at the far post. The skipper doesn't get there, but he doesn't need to, as Fuchs nearly puts his clearing header into the back of his own net!
  • 33'

Underwhelming yet again! Okazaki and Vardy are proving a real nuisance to try and contain as a result of their terrific work ethic. The former wins a free-kick even closer to goal this time around, thanks to some strong running, but Mahrez's subsequent strike cannons straight into the wall.
  • 31'

STAT: Liverpool has lost just one of its last five away games against Leicester in the Premier League (2-1-2).
  • 29'

The Foxes don't wait long for another chance from a dead-ball situation, breaking quickly and capably before winning a corner. Mahrez's delivery is a good one and Huth rises well to meet it, but the defender lifts his header over the bar.
  • 27'

Poor effort in the end from Fuchs, after a questionably worked routine from the set-piece. The defender's tame effort from 25-yards out skips harmlessly into the waiting arms of Mignolet.
  • 25'

High-octane, non-stop, fast-paced action at the King Power. There has hardly been a stoppage as we surpass the halfway mark of this opening frame, but both teams get a welcome breather as Vardy wins the Foxes a free-kick in a dangerous area, luring Lovren into a challenge.
  • 23'

Liverpool appear very confident in possession and have a good understanding in attack - but it has yet to translate into many clear-cut chances. They're lacking a bit of ingenuity at the moment, while the Foxes are doing an admirable job of remaining compact in defence.
  • 21'

STAT: Liverpool have allowed their opponent to score with their first shot on target in all four Barclays Premier League games so far in 2016 - a streak which came to an end with Mahrez's shot earlier.
  • 19'

The visitors are really taking over this match, asserting their authority and demonstrating complete control. The Foxes are more than capable, as we have seen all season, of absorbing pressure and hitting back on the break, so the Reds still need to be wary of committing too many bodies forward.
  • 17'

Liverpool continue to pour on the pressure, with the Foxes pinned deep in there end. They're finally provided a bit of respite as Lucas drives towards the byline and gets his cross all wrong, sending it well behind for a goal kick - but the Reds are starting to take control.
  • 15'

Had to be better! A heavy touch from Kante gives Liverpool possession straight back following a corner. A cross comes in for Sakho, who heads it back across goal for Firmino. The Brazilian should really be going for goal from there, but instead opts to try and square for Lallana - Huth is wise to it.
  • 13'

Schmeichel is forced into a terrific save at the other end on Can, but the flag was up for offside so it wouldn't have counted - though the keeper hardly knew about it until after the fact. The pace has yet to fade from the match and an opening goal certainly appears imminent.
  • 11'

STAT: Leicester City have spent 43 days at the top of the 2015-16 Premier League table - only Man City (100 days) have been top for longer this season.
  • 9'

WHAT A SAVE! Henderson is caught in possession and that allows Leicester to break on the counter. Vardy sprints down the left and floats an absolutely tremendous cross in for Okazaki, but the forward's header is turned onto the roof of the net by the fingertips of Mignolet! He really should be scoring from there.
  • 7'

Huth conceded a free-kick with a foul on Lallana, and it was a rather cynical intervention from the German who should consider himself lucky not to pick up a booking. The centre-half is on hand, however, to atone for his mistake, heading clear Henderson's inviting delivery into the box.
  • 5'

It has been a lively start to proceedings at the King Power. Both sides boast plenty of attacking flair and are doing their best to send the ball forward with every passing chance. Can gets the first opportunity at the other end as he makes a tidy run towards the edge of the area, but his final effort is very poor.
  • 3'

Almost a dream start for Leicester! They nick the ball in midfield and break quickly through Mahrez. The winger uses the run of Okazaki to open up space for a shot, cutting into the centre and curling a left-footed strike just inches wide of the far post!

The King Power has been the home to many significant Premier League fixtures this season, and it has yet to disappoint. These fans cheer on the Foxes with great pride, and have provided a raucous atmosphere ahead of tonight's contest with the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp reverts to his strongest side after resting many of his regulars in their scoreless FA Cup draw with West Ham on the weekend. The big news surrounds centre-half Dejan Lovren, who partners Mamadou Sakho in defence. Skipper Jordan Henderson has recovered from injury and starts in midfield along Lucas Leiva and Emre Can. Roberto Firmino keeps his place up top in a false nine, flanked by Adam Lallana and James Milner.
  •

As has been the case for much of the season - and a large contributor to the Foxes' success - Claudio Ranieri names an unchanged starting lineup from their victory over Stoke. Leicester had the weekend off, having been ousted in the previous round of the FA Cup, which allowed Shinji Okazaki to rest up after limping off against the Potter, and the striker thus keeps his place alongside Jamie Vardy in attack. New signing Daniel Amartey isn't included in the squad.

    CONFIRMED TEAM NEWS:
  •

While the Foxes enjoy their time in the sunshing, Liverpool have seemingly had to scrape and claw their way to every point. It has been entertaining at times, sure, but there has to be a better formula for the Reds. Jurgen Klopp is slowly starting to get his team in order, but they have to string together a few victories. Three points tonight would certainly be a statement, but a loss would see them drift into mid-table obscurity – likely for good.

Hello and welcome to live coverage of Liverpool’s trip to the King Power Stadium to take on leaders Leicester City, who are hoping to keep their place at the summit. Everything the Foxes have accomplished so far this season is truly remarkable, but what’s even more surprising is the fact that people still aren’t convinced. Claudio Ranieri and company hardly care, of course – and they are nowhere near done proving people wrong. The doubters are becoming scarce, and the number would shrink a great deal with a Leicester victory tonight over the Reds.
