Romania 0-0 Spain: Hosts frustrate toothless Roja

The reigning European Championship holders were held to their second draw in less than a week as their opponents gave them few opportunities to break through

Spain once again struggled to impress in the build-up to Euro 2016 as they played out a goalless friendly draw with Romania on Sunday.

Three days on from an underwhelming performance in a 1-1 draw against Italy, Spain again lacked consistency and fluency in Cluj.

Vicente del Bosque's men showed glimpses of their trademark free-flowing passing style, but the head coach will expect more with their European Championship defence starting in a little over two months.

Gerard Pique wasted Spain's best chance shortly after half-time, while Pedro also went close in the first half, but the visitors failed to do enough to break down a resilient Romania defence.

There were plenty of positives to take from a Romanian point of view, with Nicolae Stanciu - who was twice denied by Iker Casillas - at the heart of their effective counter-attacking style.

Anghel Iordanescu's men subsequently stretch their unbeaten run to 17 matches and Romania are in high spirits with the Euros on the horizon.

Romania pressed well in the opening exchanges, with a misplaced pass from Spain debutant Sergi Roberto leading to a swift break and Bogdan Stancu just failing to make clean contact with Stanciu's cross.

Spain started to enjoy a spell of pressure and Pique's header from David Silva's free-kick hit team-mate Marc Bartra and looped towards goal, forcing a smart stop from Ciprian Tatarusanu.

Pedro was next to be foiled by the Romania goalkeeper, the Chelsea forward seeing his shot saved after a wonderful exchange between Silva and Bartra.

Romania caused problems of their own and Casillas got down well to keep out Stanciu's drive on the half volley.

Casillas was Stanciu's nemesis again on the half hour, the experienced goalkeeper making a splendid save low to his right to stop the forward's well-executed volley.

Early in the second half Pique wasted a great chance when he volleyed straight at Tatarusanu when the ball fell kindly to him at a corner.

Spain remained vulnerable in defence, though, and Florin Andone perhaps should have done better when slicing wide after being set free by Stanciu.

Another break led by the impressive Stanciu ended with Stancu curling over the top from the left of the area.

Spain introduced the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Juan Mata, Aritz Aduriz and Alvaro Morata, and Fabregas saw claims for a penalty waved away by referee Ruddy Buquet in the closing stages when seemingly caught by Cristian Sapunaru, but there was to be no late drama as the match finished all square.

The referee blows his whistle for the final time and brings an end to an impressive draw for a very talented Romania side. Anghel Iordanescu will no doubt be the happier of the two managers after seeing his team hold Spain to a well-deserved goalless draw, one that extends their excellent unbeaten run and will no doubt fill them with confidence about their chances of achieving success at Euro 2016. As for Spain, they enjoyed a few bright spells in front of goal, particularly after the introduction of Isco, but by and large they struggled inside the final third of the pitch and were unable to cause too many problems for the hosts' solid back line. At the other end, however, they were just as good as their opponents, and that will no doubt be one of the positives that Del Bosque takes away from tonight's contest.

    FULL-TIME: ROMANIA 0-0 SPAIN
  • 90'+4'

What an opportunity for Romania! Spain lose possession near to the halfway line and are caught on the counter with almost all of their players inside the hosts' half of the pitch. Torje darts down the left wing before trying to pick out Rusescu, who is completely unmarked on the edge of the visitors' penalty area, but he completely mishits his lofted pass and sends it straight into the hands of Casillas. He really should have done better with that!
  • 90'+3'

Fabregas is fouled by Sanmartean as he tries to break forward, resulting in a free-kick for Spain that they take short. They work the ball from one flank to the other as they try to find a way through the Romania back line, but they're unable to do so and are forced to turn and retreat into their own half of the pitch.
  • 90'+2'

The pace of the game has slowed down somewhat, and neither side seem to be in a particular rush to push forward. Spain are continuing to boss possession but are doing very little with it, which is making life incredibly easy for Romania.
  • 90'+1'

    SubstitutionMihai Doru Pintilii Adrian Ropotan
Ropotan has come on to take the place of Pintilii for the final few minutes of the game.
  • 90'

The fourth official has indicated that there will be four minutes of added time.
  • 89'

Spain are all over Romania at the moment as they try to find a late goal. Once again, Mata causes problems down the right wing with his skill and urgency, but Filip is there to deny the Manchester United man a way through before earning his side a goal-kick.
  • 87'

And now Fabregas goes down inside the penalty area! Mata breaks into the right-hand side of the Romania box before cutting a lovely pass back to the Chelsea midfielder. It finds him in a good position and he immediately tries to unleash a first-time shot, but just as he's about to he's sent tumbling to the ground by Sanmartean. He immediately screams for a penalty, but the referee shakes his head and allows play to go on.
  • 85'

    SubstitutionNicolae Claudiu Stanciu Lucian Sânmărtean
Stanciu receives a rousing round of applause from the Romania fans as he makes his way off the pitch to be replaced by Sanmartean for the final five minutes of the game.
  • 83'

What a dive by Stanciu! The Romania number 10, who has thoroughly impressed tonight, weaves his way into the left-hand side of the Spain penalty area before going down under a tackle from Nacho, but his fall is far too theatrical and, as a result, the referee immediately waves away his protests.
  • 81'

Aduriz receives the ball midway inside the Romania half of the pitch and he immediately fires a low pass straight into the feet of Morata. The Juventus striker controls it well before trying to muscle his way past Sapunaru on the edge of the penalty area, but the defender stands tall and denies the forward a way past.
  • 79'

SubstitutionDavid Josué Jiménez Silva Álvaro Borja Morata Martín
Spain have made a late alteration, and it's an attacking one, with Morata coming on to replace Silva.
  • 78'

Spain move the ball around quickly just outside of the Romania penalty area before Mario tries to tee up Isco, who had made a good run into the box, but just as the Real Madrid man receives the ball the linesman's flag is rightly raised for offside.
  • 77'

Cheeky attempt by Stanciu! Once again, Romania break down a Spain attacking move and immediately try to hit the visitors on the counter. The Steaua Bucharest attacking midfielder flies past the halfway line before spotting Casillas off his line, but his audacious long-range strike ends up flying a few yards over the top of the crossbar after beating the veteran goalkeeper. What a goal that would have been!
  • 76'

Ivan picks up the ball in the middle of the pitch and immediately charges forward on a determined run. He heads towards the edge of the Spain penalty area before unleashing a rocket of a shot from 25 yards out, but it's slightly overhit and fails to trouble Casillas as a result.
  • 74'

    SubstitutionFlorin Andone Raul Andrei Rusescu
Romania have made another change, with Andone making way for Rusescu.
  • 73'

Yellow Card Francisco Román Alarcón Suárez
Mario charges down the right flank before firing a low cross off Filip and out for a corner. Mata whips it into the middle of the penalty area but it's well dealt with by Tatarusanu before the ball is picked up by Ivan, who is quickly cynically fouled by Isco, resulted in a yellow card for the Real Madrid man.
  • 71'

Silva loses possession in a dangerous position deep inside the Spain half of the pitch, and Stanciu immediately takes advantage of the error. He darts towards the byline and weaves into the penalty area before trying to pick out Andone with a chipped cross, but the striker is nowhere to be found and, as a result, the pass fails to trouble the visitors.
  • 69'

It just isn't quite working for Spain in the final third of the pitch. This time it's Silva who fails to turn a good opportunity into a chance on goal, as his attempted pass out to Aduriz is completely mishit and misses the striker before rolling harmlessly out of play for a Romania throw-in.
  • 67'

SubstitutionPedro Eliezer Rodríguez Ledesma Juan Manuel Mata García
Meanwhile, Mata comes on to take the palce of Pedro for the final 23 minutes of the game.
  • 66'

SubstitutionBogdan Sorin Stancu Andrei Virgil Ivan
Stancu makes his way off the pitch to be replaced by Ivan in Romania's latest substitution.
  • 65'

Isco showcases his great pace and skill to dart into the Romania penalty before trying to fire a low cross towards Aduriz, but Chiriches is there to cut out the danger and poke the ball out for a corner before it can find the striker in front of goal.
  • 63'

Stancu should have done better! Stanciu picks up possession for Romania in the middle of the pitch and spins quickly before flying towards the Spain penalty area. He then knocks the ball out to the left-winger, who immediately unleashes a curling strike, but it's completely overhit and sails several yards over the top of the crossbar.
  • 61'

    SubstitutionAdrian Popa Gabriel Andrei Torje
And now Romania have made a substitution, with Popa, who has arguably been one of their best players tonight, making way for Torje.
  • 60'

SubstitutionSergi Roberto Carnicer Francesc Fàbregas i Soler
And the second is Fabregas, who takes the place of Roberto.
  • 60'

SubstitutionFrancisco Alcácer García Aritz Aduriz Zubeldia
Spain have decided to make a double substitution. The first player to come on is Aduriz, who replaces Alcacer up front.
  • 59'

Romania quickly win back the ball and break forward through Filip in the middle of the pitch, but the left-back then ends up bringing a promising attacking move to a disappointing end with a scuffed strike that flies well wide of the Spain goal.
  • 58'

Another chance for Andone! Once again, Romania try to hit Spain on the counter after winning back the ball in the middle of the pitch, and Hoban sends an excellent lofted pass up towards the Cordoba striker. He initially brings it down well before trying to muscle his way past Bartra, but the Barcelona defender stands tall and denies his opponent the opportunity to do so.
  • 56'

And now Andone goes close! A half-hearted Spain attacking move breaks down and, once again, Romania hit their opponents on the counter. The striker flies into the left-hand side of the penalty area before trying to test Casillas from close range, but, off balance, he ends up scuffing his strike into the side-netting.
  • 54'

Chance for Silva! Koke picks up the ball in a pocket of space midway inside the Romania half of the pitch and immediately sends an excellent pass straight into the feet of the Manchester City attacking midfielder. He's in a great position inside the penalty area but lets himself down with a poor first touch, allowing Chiriches to fire the ball off his feet and out for a goal-kick.
  • 52'

SubstitutionGerard Piqué Bernabéu José Ignacio Fernández Iglesias
Spain have made their second change of the night, with Nacho coming on to replace Pique.
  • 51'

Romania try to push forward again through Andone, who once again finds himself in a good position deep inside the Spain half of the pitch, but, not for the first time this evening, Bartra defends brilliantly to keep the Cordoba striker.
  • 49'

Stancu goes close! Andone flies deep into the Spain half of the pitch on a determined counter-attack and has only Pique to beat, but he's unable to find a way past the Barcelona defender and has to settle for a corner. The ball is flung into the middle of the box and bounces around before finding the left-winger, but his thumping strike ends up being deflected agonisingly wide of the near post.
  • 47'

Chance for Pique! An impressive start to the second half by Spain results in an early corner for the visitors thanks to good play by Mario. The resulting set-piece is flung over to the far post, where it finds the centre-back completely unmarked, but he ends up firing a volleyed shot straight into the hands of Tatarusanu.
  • 46'

SubstitutionManuel Agudo Durán Francisco Román Alarcón Suárez
Spain have decided to make one substitution during the half-time break, with Nolito making way for Isco.
  • 46'

    And we're underway once again!
  •

The two teams are making their way back out onto the pitch ahead of the start of the second half.
  •

Both managers will be relatively happy with how their teams have performed thus far, with both enjoying themselves in front of goal. However, Romania have arguably been the better of the two, as the speed and urgency that they are showing when breaking forward on counter-attacks has caused Spain's defence a few too many problems. Popa and Stanciu have been the standout players for the hosts, as every time they have the ball at their feet they are causing issues for their opponents.
  •

    HALF-TIME: ROMANIA 0-0 SPAIN
  • 45'+1'

Romania try to push forward on one last attacking move of the first half by thumping a lofted pass deep into the Spain half of the pitch, but the pass is easily cut out by Pique, who then blasts the ball towards the halfway line before the referee brings an end to what has been an entertaining and interesting opening period.
  • 45'

The fourth official has indicated that there will be just one minute of added time.
  • 45'

    Yellow Card Adrian Popa
Popa breaks down the right wing and battles with Alba before winning his side a corner. It's curled by Stancu into the middle of the box but fails to trouble the Spain defence, allowing Silva to fly forward on swiftly counter-attack. However, he's quickly fouled by a cynical challenge from the Romania right-winger, who receives the first yellow card of the game as a result.
  • 43'

Nolito brings the ball down beautifully before breaking down the left wing on a determined run. He then cuts inside before trying to pick out Silva with a looping cross over to the right-hand side of the Romania penalty area, but Filip is there to beat the Manchester City midfielder to the ball.
  • 41'

Once again, Koke sends a lovely pass out to the right wing, where this time it finds Pedro in an onside position. The Chelsea man quickly fires a bouncing cross towards Alcacer at the near post, but Grigore is there to cut out the danger with a vital interception before it can find the Valencia striker, who looks frustrated at the lack of opportunities that he has been presented with.
  • 39'

Romania attempt to kick-start a counter-attack after winning possession in the middle of the pitch, but Koke is there to deal with the danger. He then spots a runfrom Pedro and tries to pick out the winger with a lofted pass over to the right flank, but the dart forward was slightly mistimed and, as a result, the linesman's flag is quickly raised.
  • 37'

Spain try to patiently push down the right flank through Pedro, but the Chelsea man ends up having his pocket picked by Stancu. The Romanian winger then quickly tries to pick out Popa with a lofted pass over to the opposite wing, but Bartra does wonderfully well to dart across and cut out the danger with a strong headed clearance.
  • 35'

It's been a nervy few moments for Spain, who have enjoyed a few good chances when pushing forward but haven't looked entirely comfortable at the back. Stanciu and Popa have been particularly impressive for the hosts, and they are continually causing the visitors' plenty of problems whenever they have the ball at their feet.
  • 33'

Vital save by Casillas! Romania fly into the Spain half of the pitch as they look to put the visitors under plenty of pressure. A 20-yard Stanciu strike is deflected out of play for a corner, which eventually finds its way back to the Steaua Bucharest midfielder, and this time his thumping shot is just about pushed round the post by an impressive diving stop by the veteran goalkeeper.
  • 31'

Spain patiently work their way down the left wing, with Alba and Nolito linking up well just outside of the Romania penalty area. The left-back then chips a dangerous cross into the middle of the box, where Alcacer is waiting in front of goal, but the striker is out-muscled by Grigore and, as a result, is unable to make contact with the ball.
  • 29'

The resulting corner is comfortably dealt with by the Romania defence, allowing the hosts to break forward on another impressive counter-attack. They move the ball around well before Stanciu is teed up on the right-hand side of the box, but his low cross-cum-shot fails to beat Casillas and is parried away by the veteran goalkeeper.
  • 28'

Nolito is really causing Romania problems down the left flank. Once again, he links up well with Silva before earning side a corner, which finds its way back to the winger. He twists and turns as he weaves his way into the penalty area and then tries to test Tatarusanu with a low shot, but it takes a deflection off a yellow shirt before rolling just wide of the near post.
  • 26'

Bartra picks up the ball near the halfway line and immediately launches a lovely lofted pass over to Pedro, who is in acres of space on the right flank. The Chelsea attacking midfielder quickly knocks the ball into the path of Silva, who then tries to tee up Alcacer, but his low cross is cut out by Hoban at the vital moment.
  • 24'

Sapunaru is able to break down the right wing on a brilliant run before curling a dangerous cross towards the near post. Casillas is there to meet it but can only parry the ball out towards the edge of the penalty area, where it finds Hoban, but the defensive midfielder ends up firing his long-range shot comfortably over the top of the crossbar.
  • 22'

Romania are looking increasingly confident as the game goes on, and they're enjoying themselves whenever they find themselves deep inside the Spain half of the pitch. Popa has started the game particularly well, and he has been causing Alba plenty of problems with his pace and skill.
  • 20'

And now it's Spain's turn to try and hit Romania on the counter after one of the hosts' attacking moves comes to an end. Nolito, who has arguably been one of his side's best performers thus far, weaves his way down the left flank before cutting inside and shooting, but his long-range effort is sent straight into the hands of Tatarusanu in the middle of the goal.
  • 18'

Another vital block by Barta! Spain lose possession on the left wing and Romania immediately fly forward on a blisteringly quick counter-attack. Andone charges deep into the visitors' half of the pitch before firing a low shot from 20 yards out, but the Barcelona defender is there to cut out the danger once again.
  • 16'

Nervy defending by Spain! Cross after cross is flung into the visitors' penalty area, and each time they are the Roja defence fail to fully deal with the danger. The ball pinballs around the box before Stancu tries to beat Casillas with a bouncing volley, but Bartra is there to throw his body in the way before thumping the ball up towards the halfway line.
  • 14'

Spain continue to push forward and put Romania under plenty of pressure. They are eventually awarded a free-kick after Pique is caught from behind, and the set-piece is sent short before Silva earns the visitors a corner. The Manchester City attacking midfielder curls a cross into the middle of the box, but it's sent too near to Tatarusanu and, as a result, the goalkeeper is easily able to collect the ball.
  • 12'

Another strong stop by Tatarusanu! Lovely one-touch football from Spain causes the Romania back four all types of problems and eventually finds Pedro in front of goal. In a slight pocket of space, the Chelsea attacking midfielder immediately tries to beat the goalkeeper with a side-footed, close-range strike, but the Fiorentina man does well to parry the effort away with his feet.
  • 10'

Good save by Tatarusanu! Silva is wrestled to the ground by Pintilii, resulting in a free-kick for Spain midway inside the Romania half of the pitch. It's curled into the heart of the penalty area, where it finds Pique, but the centre-back's towering header is tipped over the top of the crossbar by the Fiorentina goalkeeper.
  • 9'

Romania are finding a lot of joy when hitting Spain on the counter. Once again, the visitors lose possession near the halfway line, allowing Popa to break forward quickly. He then tries to tee up Stanciu with a low cross towards the edge of the box, but it's slightly mishit and is well cut out by Koke.
  • 7'

And now Popa goes close! The winger picks up the ball in acres of space 30 yards away from the Spain goal, and he immediately darts towards the visitors' penalty area. He then tries to beat Casillas with a thumping strike aimed at the bottom left-hand corner of the net, but he slightly scuffs his effort and sends it a yard or so wide of its intended target.
  • 5'

Early chance for Romania! A Spain attacking move breaks down, allowing the hosts to fly forward on a swift counter-attack down the right wing. Popa sprints towards the byline before swinging a low cross into the box, where it finds Stanciu, but the number 10 is unable to make decent contact with the ball and ends up seeing his poked effort sail comfortably wide of the goal.
  • 3'

Spain immediately embark on a positive start to the game, with Silva and Nolito linking up particularly well deep down the left wing. The latter then tries to fire a low cross into the Romania penalty area, but Sapunaru is there to thump it out of play for a corner. The set-piece is taken short, but the referee ends up getting in the way and, as a result, the attempted attack breaks down.

There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up evening…
  •

A slightly frustrating performance from Spain meant that they were unable to pick up a victory against Italy in their friendly clash last Thursday, but they nonetheless find themselves on an eight-game unbeaten run and, as a result, are one of the favourites to triumph at Euro 2016. Like Romania, La Roja enjoyed an impressive qualifying campaign, and despite suffering an early scare when they were beaten by Slovakia, they finished top of their group with 27 points and 23 goals, the third highest of any side. Also like the Tricolorii, Vicente del Bosque’s men have looked particularly solid at the back, resulting in them picking up clean sheets in all of their final eight group stage games. Between the loss against Slovakia and last week’s draw in Udine, they only conceded one goal in 12 clashes, an excellent record that they will be looking to rediscover in the four remaining friendly games that they have scheduled before the real test kicks off in June.

UEFA’s decision to expand the number of teams at the upcoming European Championship has benefited teams like Romania, who, thanks to a string of solid displays, have booked themselves a place at the continent’s premier competition for only the second time since reaching the quarter-finals in 2000. Impressive performances during the qualifying round saw them finish in second place in Group F, and throughout they gained admirers with their solid defensive displays, resulting in them letting in just two goals across 10 games, the best of any nation. Anghel Iordanescu, back at the helm for the third time, has worked wonders since taking charge of the Tricolorii in November 2014, and they are yet to lose a single under his watchful eye. In fact, their last defeat came against Algeria in June 2014, a run that both Denmark and Italy failed to bring to an end. It is one that they will be looking to continue tonight in what is sure to be one of their toughest tests in the run-up to this summer’s tournament in France.
