La Roma accede agli ottavi di finale nonostante il pareggio per 0-0 contro il BATE. Decisivi due miracoli di Szczesny che di fatto hanno regalato la qualificazione ai capitolini.

Fischi e qualificazione per la Roma. Uno zero a zero  utile soltanto in virtù del risultato del Camp Nou, dove il Bayer Leverkusen non è andato oltre all’1 a 1 contro i Campioni d’Europa. Gara ravvivata soltanto nella seconda metà della ripresa, quando il Bate - ormai alle strette e costretto a vincere - ha dovuto cercare a tutti i costi il gol del vantaggio, negato in due circostanze da Szczesny, vero salvatore della qualificazione giallorossa. Fischi assordanti al termine dei 90 minuti, ma la Roma è qualificata e Garcia salvo.

GERVINHO NON CE LA FA - Dopo l’infortunio di Torino, Garcia prova ad inserire Gervinho nella formazione titolare, ma l’ivoriano torna negli spogliatoi già nel riscaldamento: comincia malissimo per la Roma la sfida decisiva per il passaggio alla fase ad eliminazione diretta, con Iturbe a completare il tridente con Dzeko e Iago Falque.

Solito 4-2-3-1 invece per Yermakovich, con Stasevich, Gordeichuk e Aleksandr Hleb alle spalle dell’unico riferimento offensivo Mladenovic. RICONQUISTARE I TIFOSI - Una vittoria servirebbe anche per cominciare a ricucire un rapporto - quello coi tifosi - che a Roma si è deteriorato da tempo: ne è simbolo la quantità di seggiolini vuoti per questa occasione all’Olimpico, con la Curva Sud completamente vuota accorsa a sostenere, nel pomeriggio, la Primavera di mister De Rossi, impegnata in Youth League. Nonostante sia il Bate Borisov a dover fare la gara, però, il piano tattico dei bielorussi è quello di aspettare la Roma - non molto brillante nei primi minuti - per cercare di colpirla in infilata.

POCO SPETTACOLO - In una gara bloccata e poco divertente la prima conclusione è di Daniele De Rossi, che si coordina al volo al termine di un’azione ben sviluppata sulla destra dai giallorossi, ma la difesa del Bate riesce - in qualche modo - a liberare. Pochi minuti dopo è Pjanic, tanto per cambiare su calcio di punizione, a squillare dalle parte di Chernik, che però sventa in tuffo la minaccia. TENTATIVI - La palla buona è quella che - ad un minuto dal rientro in campo - Pjanic verticalizza per Dzeko: il bosniaco però si fa incredibilmente ipnotizzare da Chernik, che para da terra addirittura col piede. Il numero 9 prova a prendersi la squadra sulle spalle servendo Florenzi in area, ma il classe ’92 vede la propria conclusione parata nuovamente dal portiere avversario. Roma vicinissima al vantaggio per due volte nel giro di pochissimi minuti.   Another corner delivery is swung in, with Rudiger only able to nod a terrible attempt shy of the far post! Roma manage to win a free kick following a foul from Yablonski, with Garcia's men pushing plenty of maroon shirts into dangerous areas of the field. Pjanic stands over the dead ball.

  Digne sees a tame, stabbed effort head into a ruck of bodies, with Roma continuing to struggle to find a breakthrough goal. The hosts win themselves a free kick on the left flank, but a clipped delivery from Pjanic is cleared by the first man. Moments later, Iturbe wins himself a corner following a dart to the right byline.

  Chernik punches the aforementioned set-piece delivery well clear, with BATE managing to weather any early Giallorossi pressure easily. Both coaches are prowling their respective technical areas, after a hard fought and even start to proceedings in the Stadio Olimpico.

  Digne swings a cross in from the left-hand side, but Mladenovic is present at the back post to lash a timely clearance away! The Giallorossi just haven't been able to feed Dzeko any decent service so far tonight. Iturbe manages to win a corner from Polyakov, with Roma having another chance to cause serious problems.

  Pjanic musters up a very ambitious effort from the periphery of the penalty area, but the Bosnia international can't manage to test Chernik! Inside, the ball rolls behind for yet another visiting goal kick. Roma have been rather wasteful in the final third this evening. Another long pass forward is gathered up and then cleared by Polyakov!

  BATE enjoy a little bit more of the ball, but they're going nowhere fast. There are a lot of yellow players behind the ball, with the visitors trying to keep hold of possession and gain a foothold in proceedings. The likes of Falque and Iturbe have been able to offer next to nothing thus far in the wide areas.

  The opening quarter of an hour hasn't seen much in the way of entertainment, with only Nainggolan able to muster up any kind of opportunity for either outfit. BATE will be pleased that they have survived the opening minutes without incident.

  BATE try to slow the contest down, with the away side going all the way back to Chernik in order to take the sting out of some successive Roma attacks. Dzeko is picked out making a dangerous run towards the back post, with a clearance conceding a corner for the Giallorossi. The resulting set-piece delivery flashes across the face of goal and away from Iturbe!

  Roma have called the shots early on, but BATE are sitting back and inviting on plenty of pressure. The visitors are looking to break at pace, with Hleb trying to set the likes of Stasevich and Gordeychuk away in dangerous areas. The hosts try to push forward, but Nainggolan sees a shot charged down, before the ex-Cagliari man sends a second attempt painfully over the crossbar!

  BATE break down the right flank, with Hleb able to slide a brilliant through ball behind enemy lines! An attempted delivery from the byline is blocked with ease. Neither goalkeeper has got a lot to do at the moment, with both Chernik and Szczesny playing the role of spectators.

  Digne is penalised for a stupid foul on Polyakov, with early pressure from Roma not coming to any kind of fruition. Mozolevksi is picked out gallivanting down the right flank, but the BATE forward is forced back towards his own goal! Iturbe is felled while trying to counter attack, with the aforementioned visiting forward hurt while cynically fouling the Argentina international.

  Roma work their way down the right-hand side, after some good hold-up play from Dzeko! Florenzi is found overlapping down the flank, but the Giallorossi utility man is only able to send a swirling cross-cum-shot out of play! The hosts have looked fairly bright from the off.
