PSV 2-1 CSKA Moscow: Dutch champions progress at Manchester United's expense

PSV 2-1 CSKA Moscow: Dutch champions progress at Manchester United's expense

Luuk de Jong and Davy Propper cancelled out a penalty that had put the visitors ahead to ensure Philip Cocu's side advanced to the knockout stage as their English rivals lost

PSV came from a goal behind to beat CSKA Moscow 2-1 and advance to the Champions League knockout stage at the expense of Manchester United.

Goals from Luuk de Jong and Davy Propper cancelled out a Sergei Ignashevich's penalty in dramatic finish, meaning Phillip Cocu's side secured second place in Group B.

Having looked like they were going out of Europe altogether when they trailed in the second half, PSV staged a rousing comeback to score twice in the space of seven minutes to turn the game on its head.

The result means the Dutch side finish behind Wolfsburg, whose 3-2 win over United leaves the Premier League giants having to settle for a place in the Europa League.

CSKA finish bottom of their Champions League group for a third season running, and their winless run now stretches to seven matches in all competitions.

With their fans creating a superb atmosphere prior to kick-off, PSV started brightly.

Jurgen Locadia was a serious threat down the left, and CSKA's high defensive line gave the winger hope of getting in behind.

However, for all their energy, PSV had only one serious chance in the first half. De Jong wasted it, heading Hector Moreno's cross from the left straight at goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev.

CSKA looked just as likely to score at the other end, although they had less possession in the first 45 minutes.

Ahmed Musa's shot from a tight angle hit the side netting in the 10th minute, while PSV goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet acrobatically turned away a free-kick from the left foot of Zoran Tosic.

Jeffrey Bruma curled a free-kick over the bar for PSV after the break, but the match failed to carry the same intensity in the second half.

That was until a needless challenge from Andres Guardado gave away a penalty. Tosic invited the tackle before falling theatrically, allowing Ignashevich to break the deadlock from the spot.

PSV were in danger of finishing at the foot of the table at that stage, but captain De Jong's goal - neatly taken after a header into the area had found him onside - suddenly shook up the standings again, and meant Akinfeev has failed to keep a clean sheet for the 37th Champions League match in succession.

Any late nerves for the home side were relieved when Propper rammed home the winner.

His shot from outside the box flew past Akinfeev and avenged a 3-2 defeat to CSKA in the reverse fixture. More importantly, it also made sure of PSV's progress to the last 16.

Thanks very much for joining us for this live text commentary this evening. Enjoy the rest of your week and we hope to see you again soon!

So there you have it. What a topsy-turvy evening it has been, truly Champions League football at its dramatic best. PSV can look forward to potentially hosting one of Europe's best in 2016 while Manchester United will have to get used to Thursday night football. As for CSKA Moscow they will now concentrate their efforts on maintaining their position at the top of the Russian League.
  •

CSKA never really looked like seriously troubling Zoet in the PSV goal until Tosic won the penalty for his side. The spot kick was expertly converted by Ignashevich but the Russians weren't in the lead for long enough for it to be meaningful. The defending or lack there of for de Jong's equaliser was woeful and Leonid Slutski will be livid for the soft fashion of the equalising goal. From then on they never truly recovered but it looked like they might just see it out for a draw until Davy Propper popped up with a sensational strike.
  •

So PSV have done it, against the odds they have qualified for the knockout stages at the expense of Manchester United who drop into the Europa League. The Dutch champions certainly did things the hard way and looked to have shot themselves in the foot when Guardado gave away the penalty to CSKA. Full credit to Phillip Cocu's men though for the way they rallied and turned this game around. It was an enthralling final twenty minutes or so at the Philips Stadion and you have to say that the home side did just enough over the 90 minutes to warrant the victory.
  • 90'+2'

Full time here in Eindhoven. PSV 2-1 CSKA Moscow!
  • 90'+1'

Akinfeev goes walkabout and Locadia looks to make the result safe but he can't beat Berezutski who is covering on the goal line.
  • 89'

WIDE! Natkho lines up a freekick about 20 yards from goal and bends it well enough around the wall but can't get sufficient curl to guide it past Akinfeev.
  • 87'

What a finale to this contest. No sooner had news filtered through that Manchester United had equalised than PSV went in front. Since the hosts went in front we now know that Wolfsburg have gone back in front which should make everyone a bit more relaxed here in the Netherlands.
  • 85'

    Assist Steven Bergwijn
The ball struck Steven Bergwijn and he certainly didn't know much about it but it was a vital touch as he set up Propper for PSV's second goal of the night.
  • 85'

    Goal Davy Pröpper
2-1 to PSV! What a strike from Davy Propper! The midfielder latched onto a knockdown and lashes the ball into the bottom corner to send the Philips Stadion into raptures.

Substitution Gastón Rodrigo Pereiro López Steven Bergwijn
  • 83'

    Yellow Card Jeffrey Bruma
Bruma stupidly blocks the run of Dzagoev, who in all honesty was going absolutely nowhere down the left wing. It presents CSKA with the chance to chuck it into the box but not for the first time they can beat the first man and PSV can breathe again.
  • 80'

What a frantic few minutes after a bit of a lull in proceedings. Both teams are trying to settle themselves down now. The defending from CSKA Moscow for the PSV equaliser was absolutely criminal. They were all waiting for an offside that never came, schoolboy stuff - play to the whistle!
  • 78'

    Assist Jorrit Hendrix
Hendrix did well to keep the ball alive and nods it through to Luuk de Jong who makes no mistake from inside the box.
  • 78'

    Goal Luuk de Jong
1-1! Luuk De Jong equalises! Incredible stuff here. The flag rightly stays down and the PSV number 9 shows real coolness to tuck away the chance.
  • 77'

    Yellow Card Aleksandrs Cauņa

    Penalty Goal Sergei Ignashevich
IGNASHEVICH SCORES 1-0 TO CSKA MOSCOW! What a penalty, nerves of steel shown there. A stuttering run up before sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and passing it into the corner. Game on!
  • 75'

    Yellow Card Luuk de Jong
Luuk de Jong is booked for his protestations, he will now miss PSV's next match in European competition.
  • 75'

Yellow Card José Andrés Guardado Hernández
Yellow card José Andrés Guardado Hernández
  • 74'

Dzagoev's corner finds its way to Tosic, who toe ends the ball away from Guardado who upends the CSKA Moscow midfielder. There wasn't much contact but enough!
  • 74'

    PENALTY TO CSKA MOSCOW!
  • 72'

Ignashevich shows all his experience there as he makes sure Propper runs into him and CSKA can get the decision. The veteran Russian defender has more Champions League appearances to his name than the PSV team combined.
  • 70'

Phillip Cocu will surely want to see his side show a bit more urgency as we go into the final twenty minutes of this match. You feel that PSV are reasonably content with this result at present and are playing a little within themselves just now.
  • 68'

The home fans are understandably baying for every decision and putting the officials under a lot of pressure for decisions. This time it is the referee who receives the wrath from the stands as he fails to award PSV a freekick after the ball appeared to strike Nababkin on the arm.
  • 66'

Yellow Card Gastón Rodrigo Pereiro López
Nasty challenge by Pereiro there as he left his studs in on Cauna as he cleared the ball.
  • 64'

Things are quite scrappy at the moment and neither side can sustain any type of attacking momentum. PSV need to keep their composure and ready themselves for a big effort in the final quarter of this match.
  • 62'

SHOT! Bruma initially does well to beat his man in relatively foreign unknown territory on the right wing but then scuffs his low cross and the ball is cleared but only as far a Propper who rather slashes at the ball and his effort goes miles over the crossbar.
  • 60'

WIDE! Musa pulls his shot wide from just inside the penalty and perhaps he should have opened the scoring there. Nabakin did really well to pull the ball back to him in the build up. Zoet could only stand and hope that it did end up in the bottom corner. Let off for PSV there.
  • 58'

Manchester United could do with a CSKA Moscow goal but the Russians have only scored 1 goal in their last four games and have not won in their last six outings.
  • 56'

    Yellow Card Kirill Nababkin
Nababkin goes into the referee's notebook after committing a silly challenge on Locadia from behind, he was never going to get the ball there.
  • 56'

OVER! Nababkin brings Locadia down and it presents PSV with a real chance to test Akinfeev from the freekick. Bruma stands over the ball and clearly fancies a pop, he whips the ball up and over the wall but can't get the sufficient dip and it flies over the bar.
  • 54'

Pereiro looks to take on his man but is well snuffed out by Cauna. From the resulting throw on Locadia wants a foul but bizarrely the referee gives the decision in CSKA's favour. More frustration for the home side.
  • 52'

Hendrix takes a pot shot from the top of the 'D' but it is well closed down. The rebound falls to Locadia who in turn slips it into de Jong who tries to wriggle his way through and then rather throws himself to the ground in search of a penalty but his attempts are in vain and the referee waves play on.
  • 50'

It is noticeable that the PSV fans have fallen a bit quiet at the start of this second period. The noise had been relentless all night until this point. There are obviously plenty of nerves jangling in the stands as there are on the pitch.
  • 48'

PSV have seen plenty of the ball in these early stages of the second half but they have not threatened their opponents. CSKA are quite happy to let them have possession in their own half.
  • 46'

PSV get the second half underway!
  •

The players are back on the pitch and the second half is just moments away...
  •

Phillip Cocu is a pretty cool customer and won't be getting too carried away with events over in Germany. PSV's task is unchanged from what it was prematch, they need to win their game and hope the rest takes care of itself. The Dutch side will be mindful that things can change very quickly on the last matchday of the Champions League group stages and will want his players fully focussed on getting the victory. Cocu will want his forward players to take a little bit more care in the final third if they are to break down this dogged CSKA Moscow defence. He has the likes of Maher and Schaars on the bench to call upon and you suspect it won't be too long before either one or both of them are introduced if it stays at 0-0.
  •

You suspect that CSKA will be the happier of the two sides at the interval. They have executed their gameplan pretty effectively thus far. Leonid Slutski will be feeling that the longer the game stays at 0-0 the more chance they have of nicking something on the break, as PSV are bound to get more nervous and edgy as the evening progresses. If the home side overcommit then the Russian side have the players to punish them on the counter.
  • 45'+1'

That's half time PSV 0-0 CSKA Moscow.
  • 45'+1'

CHANCE! Bruma meets Guardado's inswinging corner from the right but the former Chelsea defender can't get his header on target. That was a virtually free header for the defender, he really should be testing the goalkeeper there.
  • 44'

Berezutski breathes a sigh of relief as the referee correctly gives CSKA a freekick after a nudge by Pereiro. De Jong was waiting to ponce behind the experienced centre back but the officials halted him in his tracks.
  • 42'

Leonid Slutski, the CSKA boss, will be particularly annoyed with the way his side have wasted quite a few dead ball situations this evening. With the exception of Tosic's effort on goal they have been very wasteful from set pieces.
  • 40'

CSKA have some excellent technical players in their side and every one of them seems comfortable on the ball. With not much pressure on them tonight they are playing with a refreshing amount of freedom. Can they create a meaningful chance before the break?
  • 38'

De Jong shows great feet to dribble past a couple of tackles but then immediately undoes his good work but gifting possession back to the opposition with a very poor cross - much to the annoyance of the PSV faithful.
  • 36'

    Yellow Card Pontus Wernbloom
    Yellow card Pontus Wernbloom
  • 36'

SAVE! Tosic bends a freekick from the right handside towards Zoet's top corner but the PSV goalkeeper does brilliantly to palm is away to safety. Doumbia had drawn a foul from Moreno with a neat piece of skill.
  • 34'

Doumbia's pace and trickery is making life difficult for the PSV backline. If CSKA are to get anything from this match you suspect it is the man on loan from Roma that will be at the heart of it.
  • 32'

Some of PSV's build up play has been very pleasing to the eye but their final ball is letting them down at times. CSKA on the other hand will feel pretty satisfied with how the first half has gone so far, they look a very well organised outfit and are staying in a very compact team shape.
  • 30'

We are hearing that Wolfsburg are leading Manchester United 2-1 in Germany, so as it stands PSV are going through and the home fans have reacted accordingly. Still a long way to go of course but it should give the Dutch side some encouragement to go forward and put United under even more pressure by going in front.
  • 28'

SAVE! Delightful deep curling cross from Moreno is met by Luuk de Jong but his header is straight at Akinfeev from about twelve yards out. Perhaps the PSV centre forward should have done a bit better there.
  • 26'

Contender for the worst freekick of the week from CSKA Moscow there. Tosic steps over the set piece and Natkho looks take the set piece short but Locadia is alive to it and reads the pass. PSV try to take advantage of the situation but the move breaks down, not for the first time this evening.
  • 24'

CSKA Moscow are beginning to grow into this match and are causing their opponents one or two problems. Doumbia gets at the heart of the PSV defence with a lovely turn away from his marker but just as he looks to pull the trigger he is well tackled by Bruma.
  • 22'

CSKA enjoyed their longest spell of sustained possession of the evening with Tosic, Musa and Natkho exchanging passes. Tosic then cuts inside onto his left foot and wants a free kick after going down under the challenge of Brenet but there is nothing doing from the referee.
  • 20'

You feel that PSV will need to patient this evening as CSKA aren't going to give anything away cheaply. Phillip Cocu will be pleased with the way his side have kept the ball so far and the way they have tried to mix up their passing. Not afraid to hit long diagonal passes if the opportunity is there.
  • 18'

Farnolle gives the ball away cheaply in the centre of the field but CSKA can't make anything of the opportunity to launch a counter attack. Instead it is PSV who go on the attack and Locadia looks to take on his man and beats him easily but his attempted pull back is hacked away from danger.
  • 16'

Pereiro dances past a couple of challenges on the top of the CSKA box but Locadia rather gets in his way and is subsequently flagged for offside. If the PSV striker had gotten himself out of the way his teammate could have been in there.
  • 14'

Cauna does well to get to the byline from his left back position and win a corner from Farnolle. Dzagoev takes the set piece short and Tosic's cross is easily headed away by Bruma.
  • 12'

Tosic and Dzagoev are playing as inverted wingers which naturally narrows up CSKA's play but they have been unable to get involved in the game as of yet. Very much on the fringes of things at the moment. The Russians will want to seem them both on the ball more.
  • 10'

WIDE! Musa bursts into the PSV penalty area down the inside left channel and tries to beat Zoet at his near post. He gets hold of his shot well but slices it a touch and the ball goes wide of the post. First real sign of attacking intent from the visitors.
  • 8'

Guardado is starting to grow in influence on this match and is beginning to dictate play from the middle of the park. He sweeps a wonderful pass out wide with the outside of his boot and finds the overlapping Brenet. The left back swings in a deep cross but Akinfeev does well to punch it clear.
  • 6'

SHOT! Pereiro does well to create some space for himself midway inside the CSKA half with a lovely turn on the swivel. He then lets fly from all of 25 yards out but drags his left footed shot well wide.
  • 4'

CSKA are playing a high line and are looking to press PSV from the front, it seems a risky tactic given the pace of the likes of Locadia and Pereiro possess.
  • 2'

PSV have set their stall out and are determined to play their way out from the back. It almost gets them into trouble as Zoet has to rush a clearance but CSKA Moscow are unable to capitalise. Tentative start from both sides.
  • 1'

CSKA Moscow get us underway! PSV are wearing their traditional kit of red and white striped shirts with black shorts and white socks while CSKA Moscow are in their away strip of bright yellow.
  •

There is a wonderful noise inside the atmospheric Philips Stadion and PSV boss Phillip Cocu will want his players to be inspired by it tonight. The whole stadium is awash with red and white chequered flags. Meanwhile the CSKA Moscow manager Leonid Slutski will have impressed upon his players the importance of keeping things tight, particularly in the first 15-20 minutes or so of the match.
  •

CSKA MOSCOW SUBS: Chepchugov, Vasin, Milanov, Golovin, Panchenko.
  •

PSV SUBS: Schaars, Maher, Jozefzoon, Pasveer, Bergwijn, De Wijs, Alberto.
  •

CSKA MOSCOW XI (4-2-3-1): Akinfeev (c); Nababkin, Berezutski, Ignashevich, Cauna; Natkho, Wernbloom; Tosic, Musa, Dzagoev; Doumbia.
  •

PSV XI (4-3-3): Zoet; Farnolle, Bruma, Moreno, Brenet; Morishige, Hendrix, Guardado; de Jong (c), Locadia, Pereiro.
  •

The team news is in and we'll start with our hosts PSV...
  •

PSV come into this match knowing that a victory for them tonight coupled with defeat for Manchester United in Germany will see them go through to the knockout stages. If PSV were to draw they could still possibly qualify but would need Louis Van Gaal's men to lose by a couple of goals. Mathematically it is not impossible for CSKA Moscow to leapfrog their opponents and finish in third position which would mean Europa League qualification but it would require a rather dramatic turnaround in their currently inferior goal difference.
