Porto 2-1 Chelsea: Mourinho's woes continue at Dragao

The reigning Premier League champions went a goal down to an Andre Andre strike before Willian equaliser with a corker, but Maicon headed home the winner in the second half

Porto captain Maicon headed a decisive second-half goal to give Porto a 2-1 Champions League win and extend Chelsea's laboured start to the season.

Julen Lopetegui's side were offered encouragement throughout the Group G clash by the defensive frailties that have undermined Chelsea over the past two months and opened the scoring at the Estadio do Dragao through Andre Andre.

Willian – recalled to the starting line-up following his weekend equaliser against Newcastle United, as Jose Mourinho benched Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic – levelled matters with a brilliant free-kick on the stroke of half-time.

But, as they did at St James' Park on Saturday, Chelsea switched off and Maicon capitalised in the 52nd minute to ensure a miserable return to his old stomping ground for Mourinho.

The margin of victory could have been greater as Danilo headed against the post inside the final 10 minute, while the result moves Porto onto four points alongside Dynamo Kiev – one ahead of Chelsea.

Iker Casillas set a Champions League record by making his 152nd appearance in the competition and the Porto goalkeeper was called into action early on.

Diego Costa, performing at his menacing best in the midst of a domestic suspension, left defenders in his wake down the left and found Cesc Fabregas, only for Casillas to save plunging to his right.

The ex-Real Madrid captain came out on top in another all-Spanish duel in the 14th minute – saving with his feet from Pedro, who charged onto Willian's crisp pass.

Some uncertain Chelsea defending ended with Vincent Aboubakar, who scored both Porto's goals in their opening 2-2 draw at Dynamo Kiev, lashing wildly over.

Full-back Maxi Pereira produced some more wayward shooting for Porto, but the sense of defensive vulnerability surrounding Chelsea was confirmed when they fell behind six minutes before the break.

Yacine Brahimi cut inside from the left past Branislav Ivanovic to draw a brilliant save from Asmir Begovic, who could not keep out Andre's volleyed follow-up.

It was all square from the final, stunning kick of the first-half – Willian fizzing a wonderful free kick over the defensive wall and across a statuesque Casillas.

Costa won the foul for the equaliser and combined with Willian to have a 48th-minute attempt deflected wide before Chelsea fell behind again.

Brahimi skipped around Ivanovic again to win a corner and Maicon peeled off the Chelsea goalline to send a clever back header beyond Begovic at the near post from Ruben Neves' delivery.

There was more rough treatment for Ivanovic at the hands of Brahimi, although the Serbian recovered to make a vital block on his tormentor, before Chelsea failed to fully clear and Neves had a deflected attempt headed away from the goalmouth by Kurt Zouma.

Mourinho sent on Hazard in place of John Obi Mikel in the 62nd minute and he was quickly into the action – collecting Pedro's pass and hurdling Maicon's lunging challenge to shoot in to the side netting.

But Chelsea's problems at the other end showed no sign of abating.

Begovic kept out a stinging drive by Giannelli Imbula in the 70th minute and the ball barely left the visiting penalty area during a sustained assault that culminated in Brahimi skipping past Ramires and missing out on the goal he deserved.

Ivanovic passed up a headed set-piece opportunity and Danilo went even closer in the 82nd minute, setting up a frantic period of stoppage time where Porto's defence managed to scramble to safety and deny the tireless Costa at the death.

And that will do it for me, Keeghann Sinanan here saying bye for now!

A thrilling night of football at Estadio Do Dragao, as Chelsea are beaten by a spirited Porto. The home side deserve every second of this, with goals from Andre Andre and defender Maicon bettering a Willian stunner. Chelsea have already lost four games this season, their same number of defeats throughout the entirety of 2014-15. Porto move level on four points with Dynamo Kiev atop Group G.

Costa is challenged in the area but the ball breaks for Kenedy, who fires wide with the keeper prone! The fans gasp and then erupt soon after as the final whistle sounds to signal the win for Porto!
  • 90' + 3'

Into stoppage time now and to be honest, Chelsea ran out of ideas a long while ago. The Blues are working a last-ditch spell of possession but every time they attempt to penetrate, Porto slam the gate shut.
  • 90' + 1'

Was that a handball? It looked like it! Costa is left fuming as a decision goes against him. He flicks the ball into the area and it brushes off Marcano's hand. Somehow, the assistant behind the goal doesn't make the call even though he was right on top of that play. I wonder what Mourinho will have to say about that!

    Yellow CardG. Imbula

Fabregas hoists in a long-range free kick into the area, but it's easily defended with Imbula's clearing header. That came moments after the excellent Brahimi was withdrawn for the volatile Osvaldo.

It was right around this time over the weekend that Willian drew Chelsea level against Newcastle to earn them a point in a 2-2 draw. The Blues will be praying for a repeat of that scoreline here in Portugal, but their play has not deserved it in the slightest.
  • 85'

Fabregas sells Kenedy a little short with his through pass, and the substitute is forced into a footrace with Martins Indi to the byline. Casillas also comes out to assist his defender, and the pair's combination is enough to shepherd the ball out for a goal-kick in the end.

Moments after his close call, Danilo is shown a yellow card for hauling back Hazard to prevent the Belgian from breaking into space. Less than 10 minutes to go and this one is still as exciting as ever.

DANILO HITS THE BAR! From a corner, the midfielder guides a superb header to the far side. Begovic is beaten but the woodwork comes to his rescue! That would have wrapped this one up!

Aboubakar wins a corner after another superb bit of hold-up play. Where do Porto keep unearthing these strikers from? Their entire attacking unit has been on song tonight - but Chelsea have aided them with some awful defending.

Imbula has had a magnificent second half, and the confidence is flowing through his veins. He races through four players in the centre, with Matic resorting to tugging him back to stop his advance. A booking follows.

Chelsea have introduced Kenedy and Matic for Pedro and Ramires, and moments after those changes, they nearly find themselves level! From a corner, Casillas comes off his line but misjudges the flight of the ball, missing his connection as Ivanovic powers a header just off target!
  • 74'

AGAIN FROM BRAHIMI! The Algerian has been tearing them apart, and he torches his marker down the left before attempting to squeeze it in at the near post. However, Begovic covers that side well and makes another crucial save!

ABSOLUTE CHAOS! Imbula draws a fine save from Begovic, but Porto keep it alive and Andre Andre's low cross causes panic in the area. Aboubakar nearly has a strike in the turn inside the box, but Cahill slides it away. However, he only gets it as far as Brahimi at the top of the box, with a deflection taking the ball just over the bar!
  • 70'

Porto are doing everything they can to prevent the ball from getting through to Hazard on the right side of the pitch. The Belgian hasn't had much to do since that earlier chance - but then again, he's not even been on the pitch for 10 minutes.
  • 68'

Dynamo Kiev are sitting pretty with a 2-0 advantage over Maccabi Tel Aviv, which would send them level on four points with Porto should both scorelines hold as we edge towards the final 20 minutes of action.
  • 66'

    Yellow CardCésar Azpilicueta
  • 66'

Azpilicueta takes one for the team on Porto's latest attack, hauling back Andre Andre who had looked to burst into the final third. The Spaniard is booked for his troubles by the referee.
  • 64'

DANGER FROM HAZARD ALMOST IMMEDIATELY! The substitute streams down the right-hand side and ghosts past a wild challenge from Maicon inside the area. He fires the ball into the side netting though! He's almost too good at dribbling, because if he was caught by Maicon that would have surely been a penalty!
  • 62'

    SubstitutionJohn Obi Mikel Eden Hazard
  • 62'

Mikel will play no further part in this game as he's withdrawn for Hazard. That should shift Ramires back to partner Fabregas in midfield, with the Belgian assuming a role on the flank.
  • 60'

Porto's attacking players are switching positions and it's making it hard for the Chelsea defence to keep tabs on them. Porto still need another goal to make sure of this though, because Mourinho's team have already come back against the run of play in this game.
  • 58'

Dangerous times for Chelsea here, who are once again struggling against a determined opponent. Eden Hazard has been spotted warming up for the visitors, while Dani Osvaldo is doing the same for the home team.
  • 56'

PANIC IN THE CHELSEA REARGUARD! Brahimi and Ruben Neves both have attempts on goal from inside the area, which are just about blocked. Zouma eventually comes to the rescue with a clearing header before Aboubakar can pounce at the third attempt!
  • 54'

OH MY WORD! THAT DESERVED A GOAL AND THEN SOME! Costa squares up to shoot from the left corner of the box, and curls the ball to the top corner on the far side. It sails over the hand of Casillas but smacks off the underside of the bar! Sensational attempt!

PORTO HAVE RESTORED THEIR ADVANTAGE! Ruben Neves clips in the corner from the left-hand side and multiple players stand still as Maicon rises to guide a lovely header into the far side of the goal!

Brahimi's footwork throughout this game has been superb, keeping the visitors guessing, and he fools Fabregas again, who is bailed out by a team-mate as Chelsea concede a corner.
  • 48'

COSTA DENIED! The Brazilian is put into a good shooting position after Willian and Azpilicueta link up down the wing, but his effort is blocked from close range. Chelsea starting strongly.
  • 46'

    Here we go again!
  •

The whistle sounded as soon as that free-kick rustled the back of the net, and we're all square at the break. Porto can feel a little hard done by that they conceded so late after an encouraging first half which saw then take the lead via Andre Andre. You have to point fingers at Casillas for that equaliser though - the ball was clearly aimed at his side side of the goal, not the wall's. Chelsea have been stuttering, but they've restored parity, setting up an enticing second half. Stay tuned for the restart soon.
  • 45' + 2'

    GoalWillian
WILLIAN GLIDES IT HOME! The Brazilian dips a superb effort around the wall and Casillas is left rooted to the spot, gesticulating frantically as the ball sails into the far side. What a way to enter the half-time break!
  • 45'

Ramires wins a free kick off Danilo in a great position near the edge of the area. Now then, Chelsea have a good chance to draw level right on the stroke of half-time. Casillas lines up his wall...
  • 43'

A lot to ponder for Mourinho at half-time, which is only moments away. How long will he keep Hazard chained to the bench for - or Terry for that matter, with Cahill, Zouma and especially Ivanovic far from convincing?
  • 41'

    Yellow CardGary Cahill
  • 41'

It's Dre Day at Estadio Do Dragao as the midfielder has sent Porto into a deserved advantage. The menacing Aboubakar wins another free-kick after he was too swift for Cahill, who picks up a yellow card for his troubles.
  • 39'

    GoalAndré André
OPENER! PORTO HAVE THE LEAD! Brahimi takes Ivanovic to the cleaners down the left, but his curling effort to the top corner is palmed away splendidly by Begovic. However, that only presents Andre Andre with the rebound, which he doesn't pass up!
  • 37'

Some nice touches around the Chelsea area see Porto set up a shooting chance for Maxi Pereira, despite a challenge coming in from Azpilicueta. However, for the second time, the full-back fires wide of the far post.
  • 35'

Chelsea are really struggling to put passes on target in the final third. Costa has lacked meaningful support on a few occasions when he's taken the ball with his back to goal.
  • 33'

This continues to be a very even game, though I get the sense that Porto are in the ascendancy. Chelsea have committed some poor individual mistakes in defence, and the hosts are getting closer and closer to exploiting them.
  • 31'

Maxi Pereira goes past Willian with far too much ease, and he squares to shoot for the far corner. However, Azpilicueta is in position to make the block with his chest, conceding a corner from which Porto can't profit.
  • 29'

Pedro runs down the right-hand side but finds his route blocked by Martins Indi. He plays the ball back for Ivanovic, but the Serbian can't do anything right it seems. His attempted through pass to Costa goes out for a goal kick.
  • 27'

Fabregas lobs it to the back post. Zouma out-jumps Maxi Pereira but even his towering leap isn't enough to connect with the ball. However, Cahill is on it just behind him at the back post and flicks it back in to contention, but there's no one arriving at the opposite side to profit.
  • 25'

    Yellow CardMarcano
  • 25'

A second booking has gone against Porto, as Marcano takes a chunk out of a sprinting Costa. This is a good position for Chelsea, and their biggest bodies are getting forward for this free-kick.
  • 23'

There's some uncertainty in the Chelsea ranks as they fail to get rid of a Porto attack. Ivanovic goes to ground and just about wins a challenge against Aboubakar on the edge of the area. The referee allows play to continue, and moments later, the striker wrestles off Zouma on the turn at the near post, but slashes his finish miles over.
  • 21'

Willian has shifted to the left flank, with Ramires attacking through the centre. That change nearly works in Chelsea's favour as the former feeds the latter through the middle for a shot from the edge of the box, but Casillas isn't really troubled by that one.
  • 19'

    Yellow CardBruno Martins Indi
  • 19'

That was a TOUGH challenge from Martins Indi on Willian, and the referee doesn't hesitate to award him the first yellow card of the game. There's been a lot of physical battles in this mach so far, which tells me that it won't be the last time that the referee has to reach into his pocket.
  • 17'

Ivanovic fails to clear a header with any sort of conviction. His form this season has been notable by its alarming decline. So often a reliable presence in the centre or the right of Chelsea's defence, is this the beginning of the end?
  • 15'

You get the feeling already that this game will be decided by the odd goal - if there is to be one at all. Porto have looked the better side on the ball, but Chelsea have created the two genuine chances so far.
  • 13'

CASILLAS CALLED INTO ACTION AGAIN! The Spaniard, on his Champions League-record 152nd appearance, denies Pedro from close range after the former Barcelona forward broke in between the centre backs to find himself with a one-on-one opportunity.
  • 11'

There is a very industrial look to this Chelsea side. Ramires and Pedro are ostensibly the wide men - fine players sure but not exactly the type to cause panic when running at their marker. It's typical away-day stuff from Mourinho, focusing on curtailing the opposition first, then taking what they can on the counter. This is arguably their toughest fixture in Group G.
  • 9'

Dynamo Kiev have taken the lead against Maccabi Tel Aviv early on, which puts them level with Chelsea on four points as things stand. Still in the infancy of this matchday though. The Blues are trying to work a spell of possession here, with Pedro and Ivanovic linking down the right.
  • 7'

STINGER! Costa does superbly down the left side to glide past a pair of players. He opts against driving to the byline and instead lays the ball off to Fabregas. The Spaniard has time to pick his spot, but Casillas is equal to his effort aimed for the bottom corner and pushes it away!
  • 5'

Cahill loses his concentration for a second and lets Aboubakar in down the right side of the area. The striker has been in rich form in Europe, but he cant keep a hold of possession and Zouma can shepherd the ball into the safe hands of Begovic. Good start from the hosts.
  • 3'

Brahimi does well to keep a hold of the ball under pressure from a pair of players, and he somehow finds the space for a shot from the edge of the box. However, he can't get much direction on it to trouble Begovic, and the keeper can smother with ease at chest level.
  • 1'

    Off we go then!

Meanwhile, in Chelsea country, Mourinho has sensationally dropped Eden Hazard to the bench - but he insists it is a purely tactical decision. Ramires and John Obi Mikel are back in the XI and form the base of midfield, while Nemanja Matic has been sacrificed for Willian. The Brazilian lines up behind Diego Costa, who is preferred to Loic Remy for the heavy lifting up front.
  •

Porto make four changes from the disappointing draw with Moreirense last time out, as Bruno Martins Indi will play on the right side of defence in place of Miguel Layun. Vincent Aboubakar, who scored twice in the match against Dynamo Kiev, steps back into the side to lead the line, with Dani Osvaldo making way. Ruben Neves and Giannelli Imbula complete the returnees.
  •

Chelsea subs: Baba Rahman, Blackman, Terry, Matic, Loftus-Cheek, Hazard, Kenedy.
  •

Porto subs: Helton, Layun, Evandro, Corona, Tello, Bueno, Osvaldo.
  •

Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Begovic; Ivanovic, Zouma, Cahill, Azpilicueta; Mikel, Fabregas; Ramires, Willian, Pedro; Costa.
  •

Porto (4-4-1-1): Casillas; Maxi Pereira, Maicon, Marcano, Martins Indi; Andre Andre, Danilo Pereira, Ruben Neves, Imbula; Brahimi; Aboubakar.
  •

Porto, meanwhile, have started the season strongly in the league, topping the table without losing once in their opening six games. However, a 2-2 draw against Moreirense has seen Sporting keep pace with them, matching their tally of 14 points. That scoreline was also the mark by which they were held by Dynamo Kiev in their first Group B game, conceding late to a Vitaliy Buyalsky strike.
  •

Chelsea have endured a miserable title challenge so far, taking only eight points from seven games in the Premier League, and shockingly for a Mourinho side, conceding 14 times - with only bottom-of-the-pile Sunderland having a worse defensive record. Their European excursions have been more fruitful, with a 4-0 victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv marking a sterling start to their group.
  •

Of course, you can't mention Mourinho without shining the spotlight on tonight's other protagonist - or antagonist, depending which colour blue you really call home. Iker Casillas will start in goal for the home side, playing against a team managed by the man that arguably hastened his decline from saint to scorned. The pair's friction during their shared time at Real Madrid has been well-documented. In my view, it essentially boiled down to Mourinho's dislike of the influence wielded by Casillas at the Bernabeu.

You can't walk 100 yards in Estadio Do Dragao without getting a whiff of Mourinho. Murals and other monuments to his achievements during his two-and-a-half year spell at Porto adorn the walls. He famously clinched the Champions League trophy with the unfancied Portuguese outfit in 2004 and he's sure to receive a warm welcome from the fans. However tonight, his main focus will be on coaxing a performance out of his stuttering side.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Champions League clash between Porto and Chelsea at Estadio Do Dragao. This clash has been circled in the calendar ever since these two were paired in Group G. Jose Mourinho returns to the scene of his greatest triumphs, and also squares off against one of his biggest foes in Iker Casillas. I'm Keeghann Sinanan, your guide for all the action.
