Manchester City 4-2 Borussia Monchengladbach: Sterling brace sends hosts through as group winners

Два гола игрока сборной приводят к победе в группе Д

The England international's late double completed a dramatic comeback for Manuel Pellegrini's men, who came from 2-1 down to defeat the Bundesliga outfit and finish top of Group D

Raheem Sterling's late brace ensured Manchester City topped Group D in the Champions League as they won 4-2 to eliminate  Borussia Monchengladbach from European competition.

City needed to win and hope Juventus lost at Sevilla to avoid a potential draw against the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich, and they took the lead when David Silva hammered home.

But Gladbach, who had not scored in either of their away Champions League matches this season, were level within two minutes when Julian Korb beat Joe Hart with a low strike.

The German side, unbeaten in their 12 matches since losing to City earlier in the campaign, took the lead before half-time, Raffael applying the finishing touch after Oscar Wendt's cross deflected off Lars Stindl into the Brazil attacker's path.

But Sterling, on his 21st birthday, scored twice in the final 11 minutes, finishing off Silva's pass and then curling in from 15 yards.

Wilfried Bony tucked in the last goal of the game with six minutes to go to complete a brilliant comeback for Manuel Pellegrini's men.

Gladbach came into the match on the back of breaking Bayern Munich's record-breaking unbeaten start to the Bundesliga campaign with a 3-1 win and they almost took the lead after four minutes, but Korb fired over from 10 yards.

City were operating without a recognised striker due to Sergio Aguero's latest injury, but their fluid front three combined to glorious effect to create the opening goal on 15 minutes. Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne linked up to feed Silva and the Spain midfielder smashed in his first goal since August.

Schubert's men were level within two minutes after slicing the hosts wide open with a rapid break. Fabian Johnson's low cross found its way through the box, via Stindl's touch, to Korb and he drove a first-time shot across Joe Hart and into the bottom corner.

Sterling and Yaya Toure had efforts from 25 yards go off target before Fabian Delph flicked a volley over the crossbar.

But Gladbach were in front shortly before half-time. City's defence backed off and when Wendt's cross bounced off Stindl, Raffael was on hand to turn the loose ball past Hart.

City improved after the break and almost got on level terms after a mistake from 19-year-old defender Nico Elvedi let in Sterling, but Yann Sommer spread himself to keep his team in front and the goalkeeper saved from Silva and Sterling again as City cranked up the pressure.

Sommer was saving everything that came his way, pulling off a wonderful stop diving low to his right to deny Sterling once more.

But Sterling finally got his birthday goal with 11 minutes to go, tapping home Silva's pass from close range, and the winger was soon on target again, beating Sommer with a curling effort to put City back in the lead.

Substitute struck with six minutes to go to complete a fine comeback and, courtesy of Juventus losing 1-0 in Seville, give City pride of place at the top of Group D and left Gladbach bottom of the group as two-time Europa League champions Sevilla snatched third and a chance to seal a historic hat-trick.

And that will do it from the Etihad! City manufacture another comeback to secure the victory they need to battle for top spot in Group D. They held up their end of the bargain, and in the other match in this section, Sevilla defeated Juventus 1-0 to reshuffle the standings on the last matchday! Group D finishes with City first and Juve second. Sevilla drop into the Europa League, while Gladbach exit Europe altogether after collapsing in the second-half. That's all from us then, see you in the knockout stages!
  • 90'+3'

Silva's pass ricochets through to Sterling, who has a defender on his back and is losing his balance fast. Those two factors combine to put him off his finish, which is poked right into the arms of the waiting Sommer.
  • 90'+1'

City like doing things the hard way, don't they? Another late turnaround here at the Etihad. Sevilla are still 1-0 up against Juventus, meaning that first place beckons for the Citizens.
  • 89'

HUGE SAVE FROM HART! The England keeper blocks a snap-shot inside the area, but more crucially, Raffael collects the loose ball on the near side and has a lot of net to aim at, but decides to cut it back instead, and it's cleared!
  • 87'

Navas links with Toure, teeing up the Ivorian at the edge of the area for a curler that heads about a foot or two over the bar. Confidence is coursing through the veins of the home team now!
  • 85'

    Goal Wilfried Guemiand Bony
BONY HAS SEALED THE POINTS! Kolarov, who has been superb in this half, sprints to the byline and cracks a low ball into the area. The Ivorian's first shot rebounds off a defender, but he picks up the pieces and slots home before Sommer can react!
  • 84'

    SubstitutionOscar Wendt Thorgan Hazard
Hazard the Younger has come on to replace Wendt.
  • 83'

That goal means the world for City, and spells doom for Gladbach. With Sevilla still leading Juventus 1-0, the Premier League side will top the group, and the visitors will crash out of Europe alltogether.
  • 81'

    Assist Wilfried Guemiand Bony
The roles were reversed in the buildup for that goal, as Silva was the one to win the initial knock-down, while Bony showed the quick change of pace and supplied the killer pass.
  • 81'

    Goal Raheem Shaquille Sterling
STERLING HAS DONE IT AGAIN! WHAT A TURNAROUND! Silva wins a header which falls for Bony, who gains a few yards before releasing Sterling on the left, who curls a magnificent finish into the net!
  • 80'

    SubstitutionGaël Clichy Bacary Sagna
Clichy was about to head off for Sagna before that decisive contribution, and he departs now to what I can only assume is a considerably warmer reception than he would have gotten a minute ago.
  • 79'

    Goal Raheem Shaquille Sterling
CITY HAVE ONE BACK! Now then! I've criticized Clichy a lot in this game but he did well to race down the right and ping a cross into the area with his weaker foot. Silva touches it onto Sterling on the edge of the six-yard area and he does the rest!
  • 78'

Dangerous times for Gladbach here, with City only in the ascendancy. The home side still need two goals, but just one will set up a grandstand finish one again at the Etihad in Europe!
  • 76'

Clichy has had an easy time of it in the second-half, but he wilts when put under pressure from Schulz, who wins the ball and tees up Stindl, but his effort can't truble Hart in the City goal.
  • 74'

Gladbach have a free-kick of their own now, but instead of taking the opportunity to play it short and work a spell of much-needed possession, Xhaka whacks it on goal from range, which is saved by Hart.
  • 72'

City win a free-kick in a good position, and Kolarov whips it into the mixer, but Otamendi can't find the target. The hosts are keeping the pressure on, can they turn it into another goal?
  • 72'

    SubstitutionFabian Johnson Josip Drmic
Johnson was really impressive during the first-half, but he is replaced by Drmic after pulling up with an injury.
  • 70'

NEWS FROM SPAIN - Sevilla have taken the lead against Juventus courtesy of the Bianconeri black sheep Fernando Llorente. Gladbach still stay third as things stand, but if City can turn it around they have a chance to top the group.
  • 68'

CHANCE FOR CITY! Toure's shot is deflected right into the path of Sterling on the left-hand side, and the England international lashes a volley on target that is pushed away by an accomplished save from Sommer!
  • 67'

    SubstitutionMahmoud Dahoud Marvin Schulz
Dahoud makes way for Schulz in what is the first substitution of the game for the visitors.
  • 66'

RIGHT AT SOMMER AGAIN! Toure plays a lovely ball down the line for Kolarov, who then lasers it onto the feet of Sterling at the top of the box. The England international shifts onto his right and blasts on goal from a good position, but he didn't trouble the keeper enough!
  • 65'

SubstitutionKevin De Bruyne Jesús Navas González
De Bruyne's evening is at an end and Jesus Navas will enter the fray.
  • 65'

    SubstitutionFabian Delph Wilfried Guemiand Bony
Bony is on for Delph and will immediately lead the line.
  • 64'

Gladbach haven't shown a whole lot of attacking intent in this half, and  are guilty of allowing City to build a little head of steam. This has been the best spell of the game for the home side.
  • 62'

Sterling cuts inside from the left and strides almost all the way to the opposite side, before allowing Silva to take control of the ball, but the Spaniard's shot is weak and right down the throat of Sommer.
  • 60'

Elvedi tries to chest Fernandinho's cross back to Sommer, but Sterling nips in between the pair to get on the ball inside the area, but the Swiss keeper makes himself big to stop that! Equal parts good save and bad miss.
  • 58'

It's not been a goal-happy day in the Champions League, with four of the eight games still locked at 0-0 - including Sevilla-Juventus. Real Madrid are the only team featured in a game that has seen more than three goals so far, as they currently lead Malmo 5-0.
  • 56'

For the first time in a while, the game hits a bit of a lull as Wolfsburg try to nullify the growing City momentum. If this result stands, the hosts will finish second in the group and the visitors third.
  • 54'

City start to improve as Silva works the ball to De Bruyne inside the area, but the Belgian can't find the space for a shot and lays it off to Kolarov. The full-back's blast is blocked by the defence.
  • 52'

City desperately need a focal point up top, as the diminutive Sterling is simply not cutting it. The hosts continue to try to hit him with crosses, which is being defended by the opposition with ease.
  • 50'

Fernandinho does well to harry Gladbach out of possession, and he plays in De Bruyne, who attempts to pay it forward to a teammate in the area, but his cross lacks the requisite accuracy.
  • 48'

No changes at the break from either manager, but the match has picked up where it left off with Gladbach working a nice passing move in the City half already. They would love a two-goal cushion!
  • 46'

    Here we go again.
  •

The referee signals for the break without any stoppage time. City have to plot a comeback to secure first pace in the group, but will be encouraged by the news that Sevilla are currently locked in a goalless stalemate with Juventus. Silva's well-worked opener was overturned by goals from Korb and Raffael to give the Germans tha advantage at this point. Stay tuned for the restart in just a bit.
  • 44'

Gladbach manage to apply something concrete to their positive play as they spin this match on its head with that goal. A lot to ponder for Pellegrini at the interval, which is moments away.
  • 42'

    Goal Raffael Caetano de Araújo
GLADBACH HAVE TURNED IT AROUND! Wendt accelerates down the left to pick up a rebound, and his low bakk into the moxer is flicked by Stindl into the path of Raffael, who converts from close range!
  • 40'

Decent opening for City here as Sterling finds a way through, and sends the ball into the area, but Delph is unable to make contact. Kolarov picks up the pieces, but comes nowhere near the target.
  • 38'

De Bruyne picks up a swift pass down the right and attempts to play Sterling in with an early ball curled around the backline. However, Sommer gets there first. City haven't really been able to utilise the ex-Liverpool man's pace so far.
  • 36'

Less than 10 minutes to go until the break now, and City are starting to look a little rattled again. Gladbach's tempo has been superb. It's clear that they're still on a high following the Bayern Munich scalp.
  • 34'

City get out of their half for an extended period for the first time in a while, and try to get something going on the left-hand side. The ball is eventually worked to Sterling some 30 yards from goal, but his effort does not trouble Sommer.
  • 32'

City's right flank is ripe for exploitation. The very left-footed Clichy is being played out of position tonight, and my word does he look it. It's also putting pressure on Otamendi to come out and cover his lapses, which hasn't worked well thus far.
  • 30'

The interplay and movement in the Wolfsburg ranks are absolutely superb, with Xhaka, Raffael and Johnson combining on a one-touch move to set the American away down the left. However, his low delivery is swallowed by Mangala.
  • 28'

Right form that failed free-kick, Hart releases De Bruyne with a superb clearance, and the Belgian slides a pass into the onrushing Sterling inside the area. However, Christensen is there first to clear.
  • 27'

Otamendi is not having the best of games, and he comes in with a blatant body check on Xhaka which conceded a free-kick in a not-entirely-safe position. It's whipped into the area but City eventually shepherd it back to Hart.
  • 25'

Clichy is caught out completely by a one-two, and Stindl is allowed a run to the byline. His low cross into the six-yard area is dangerous, but Otamendi is there to hack away the danger before someone in black can get a touch.
  • 23'

Gladbach are back on the ball and passing the life out of City at the moment. Some of the sequences that they've put together in midfield have been really inventive, keeping the home side on the back foot.
  • 21'

Having a goal apiece before the first half-hour doesn't surprise me one bit. This has been an incredibly open game, with both teams trading spells of dominance. I highly doubt that the scoring is done.
  • 19'

    Assist Lars Stindl
Stindl's flick to find Korb was little more than a formality, as Johnson did all the hard work to motor into the box, and his initial cross looked to be finding the goalscorer on the far side anyway.
  • 19'

    Goal Julian Korb
NOT SO FAST! GLADBACH ARE LEVEL! Johnson storms down the right-hand side, and makes inroads into the area past a collapsing City defence. His ball across the box is touched by Stindl, and Korb smashes into the bottom corner from the opposite side!
  • 18'

Yuu have to say that the goal was coming. City survived a strong start from the visitors to dominate this game, and with Sterling, Silva and Toure looking lively, they could be a threat for even more.
  • 16'

    Assist Raheem Shaquille Sterling
Sterling deserves plaudits for that assist, as he drew three defenders to him before setting Silva on his bike with a succlent backheel.
  • 16'

    Goal David Josué Jiménez Silva
LOVELY STRIKE! Sterling flicks a superb pass into the path of the Spaniard down the left, and instead of playing it back into the area, he goes for goal, smashing it into the roof of the net!
  • 15'

City are starting to take control of this game, as Silva slips one down the line for Sterling, who dinks a clever ball into the box that his teammates can't take advantage of. Nice move though.
  • 13'

Nordtveit comes in with a reckless challenge on Sterling that sends the former Liverpool man flying. No booking from the referee though, and judging by the replay, he's perhaps fortunate to escape with only a lecture.
  • 11'

It's quite jarring to see City being forced to play on the counter here, with Gladbach showing a lot more poise in midfield to dictate the early tempo of this game. The visiting fans are making a racket as well.
  • 9'

This has been a positive start from both teams, with wing play a heavy feature of their respective avenues of attack. City are looking to get the early ball forward behind what has been a high Gladbach backline.
  • 7'

Toure bombs down the right-hand side with lengthy strides that take him past three players, and he hooks in a decent cross that is just not the type of ball that Sterling's stature would allow him to get his head to. A Bony (or a Dzeko) would have relished that sort of delivery.
  • 5'

OVER THE BAR! Gladbach find a way through again as Otamendi steps up and is caught out by a quick through ball that sees Raffael running on goal from the right flank. The Brazilian lashes one on goal with the Argentine defender in hot pursuit, but he fails to hit the target.
  • 3'

Stindl brings Johnson into play with a flick, and the midfielder decides to have a crack on goal almost instantly, but it's a wild attempt that sails high into the stands. A little sloppy from City there.
  • 1'

    Off we go!
  •

Andre Schubert names an unchanged side from the XI that beat Bayern Munich over the weekend, and given the scale of that result, I don't blame him one bit. Lars Stindl is partnered by Raffael up top, with Granit Xhaka manning the centre of the park.
  •

Gael Clichy will start on the right side of defence tonight, replacing Bacary Sagna, while Fernando is replaced by Fabian Delph in midfield. Wilfried Bony also steps aside to make way for Yaya Toure, meaning that Raheem Sterling will lead the line with Sergio Aguero injured.
  •

Borussia Monchengladbach subs: Schulz, Brouwers, Drmic, Hazard, Jantschke, Hrgota, Heimeroth.
  •

Borussia Monchengladbach (4-4-2): Sommer; Elvedi, Christensen, Nordtveit, Wendt; Korb, Dahoud, Xhaka, Johnson; Stindl, Raffael.
  •

Manchester City subs: Caballero, Sagna, Bony, Navas, Pablo Maffeo, Adarabioyo, Celina.
  •

Manchester City (4-2-3-1): Hart; Clichy, Otamendi, Mangala, Kolarov; Fernandinho, Delph; De Bruyne, Toure, Silva; Sterling.
  •

These two sides have met three times previously, with the games evenly split with a win apiece and a draw. City defeated Gladbach 2-1 back on matchday two, but the German side will have confidence of pulling an upset after halting Bayern Munich's unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season with a 3-1 win over the weekend.
  •

Gladbach's 4-2 win over Sevilla in their last Champions League game saw them leapfrog the Spaniards in the standings, and put them in a good position to secure third place and a berth in the Europa League. Two points separate the sides, and all they really need to do is match the Andalusian side's result against Juventus to qualify for the second-tier continental tournament.
  •

City are currently two points behind Juventus in the group, and only a win here coupled with a Bianconeri loss against Sevilla will grant them first place. The Premier League side come into this game following a defeat against the Italians on matchday five, and a reverse against Stoke in domestic action over the weekend.
