Seydou Doumbia (left) was quickest to react to the rebound for CSKA and he smashed it home to give the hosts the advantage
Soon after that, United's summer signing received the ball after combining with Lingard but could only shoot wide with his left foot from the edge of the area.
At this stage there was no sign of the drama to come. The home crowd were excitable but apart from a couple of combinations down the right between Mario Fernandes and former United player Zoran Tosic, there was little direct danger.
About a quarter of an hour in, however, that all changed. The Russians gave themselves a little momentum with a cross that Phil Jones cleared before Tosic fired a shot in across goal that had De Gea worried for a moment.
If that was a warning, United did not heed it. Moments later, another foray down the same channel saw Martial commit the clear handball. Notably, Martial didn't seem to complain as he was booked and a penalty awarded.
With the compact stadium seemingly ready to burst, Eremenko took the spot kick and although De Gea did brilliantly to turn the ball onto the post, centre forward Doumbia — the scourge of Manchester City in Russia a year ago —arrived to slam the rebound low in to the corner.
There was some brief hope as the hour mark came and went as Rooney finally found some space to head a cross from the right powerfully down towards the near post. The goalkeeper was up to the task on that occasion while seconds later a CSKA defender was able to clear after Fellaini headed another cross – deeper this time – down at the far post.
Finally United were building some momentum of their own and moments later they should have been level as Lingard was played clear down the inside left channel. The youngster had time and space to shoot but he opened his body up early and Akinfeev was able to read his intentions and save.
Van Gaal then made another change, sending on Daley Blind for Marcos Rojo and soon had something to cheer about as Morgan Schneiderlin played Antonio Valencia clear and his cross was headed in by Martial.
Meanwhile, Paul Scholes claimed Rooney is not being helped by his United team-mates.
'Wayne's no good if he doesn't have pace around him,' he observed on BT Sport.
'I was exactly the same. Wayne's not getting that so it makes him look not the player he should be.'
Consider this. Daley Blind came on as a substitute in the 63rd minute and still had more touches (47-40) and played more passes (36-27) than Rooney by full-time. Of the starting XI, only De Gea had fewer touches.
As he enters his fourth decade, Rooney's desire has clearly not diminished, even on difficult nights like this one.
That much was clear from his frustration as he led the line in, at times, a lonely battle against the Russians' defence.
'Your 30th birthday is a big one in anyone's life but I still feel that I have a lot of years ahead of me,' he said before this game. 'For me, it's a number.'
Martial's header found the far corner of Igor Akinfeev's goal to bring Manchester United level in the 65th minute

Maybe what is even more stupid is shunting your most effective player to the wings to accommodate your most ineffective one. Maybe the biggest issue with MU is LVG not till now knowing WHO his best eleven (not ten) are and WHERE to play them
If you watched the game, it was dreadful backpasses, sitting by the ball as if we were 3-0 up. but in reality, 1 goal down. no one showed urgency to get back in the game ESP ROONEY that fat piece of . useless as a striker and as a captain. Just get rid of him

CSKA Moscow 1-1 Manchester United: Martial rescues point for Van Gaal's men
The young Frenchman grabbed his fifth goal for the Red Devils to nick a precious point after having earlier given away the penalty from which the hosts opened the scoring
Anthony Martial scored his first Champions League goal to seal a 1-1 draw for Manchester United in Wednesday's trip to CSKA Moscow.
Seydou Doumbia put the home side ahead inside quarter of an hour after turning home the rebound from Roman Eremenko's saved penalty, which Martial had conceded after being penalised for handball.
The France international redeemed his error in the second half with a fine headed equaliser – his first career goal in the competition as Van Gaal's men picked up a point.
United dictated possession for the majority, but it was an encounter low on quality, with CSKA diligent in their defensive duties and the visitors too often lethargic on the ball.
Memphis Depay – left out of the starting XI again – was thrown on for the final 10 minutes, but the visitors could not find the winning goal to take them level on points with Wolfsburg at the top of the group.
Martial had an early penalty shout waved away after tumbling under pressure, but the France international was culpable in his own box in the 15th minute, inexplicably raising a hand to block Mario Fernandes' attempt to keep the ball in play.
Eremenko's spot-kick was superbly saved by David de Gea low to his right, but Doumbia pounced on the rebound to put CSKA ahead after a kind deflection off the goalkeeper's legs.
De Gea rescued United on the half-hour mark, tipping Ahmed Musa's curling effort from 30 yards over the crossbar as Louis van Gaal's side played at a remarkably pedestrian pace.
Wayne Rooney's flick goalwards after 33 minutes – their first shot of the match – following Antonio Valencia's cross was blocked by Igor Akinfeev and the England captain curled wide moments later, but United looked short of ideas against CSKA's deep defensive line.
United continued to dominate possession after the break but Rooney's header, from a Ander Herrera cross, into the arms of Akinfeev from close range was their only meaningful chance before the hour mark.
Champions League debutant Jesse Lingard spurned a superb chance to equalise after being played through by Herrera as his low finish towards the far corner was hit tamely, before Eremenko fired straight at De Gea on a rare break forward for the hosts.
Herrera was beginning to dictate matters in the final third and the Spaniard played a crucial role when United finally found an equaliser. His precise ball to Valencia gave the Ecuador international room to cross for Martial, whose excellent glancing header went in off the far post beyond the dive of Akinfeev.
United pushed forward for a winner and Akinfeev reacted well to parry the ball away from substitute Marouane Fellaini after Depay's cross, but CSKA held out for a draw, keeping them level with Van Gaal's side on four points from three games in Group B
