Italy 2-1 Norway: Azzurri comeback consigns Scandinavians to play-offs

Итальянцы забивают в последние 17 минут матча

Alexander Tettey opened the scoring midway through the first half in Rome but Alessandro Florenzi and Graziano Pelle both struck for Antonio Conte's men in the final 17 minutes

Norway dramatically missed out on automatic qualification for Euro 2016 as Italy produced a second-half comeback to claim a 2-1 victory at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday.

Per-Mathias Hogmo's men went into their last Group H clash in the second and final automatic spot and leading Croatia by two points.

And Norway appeared on course for the finals when Alexander Tettey opened the scoring in the 23rd minute.

The Norwich City midfielder powered a low strike beyond Italy goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon to put the home side's streak of 49 consecutive qualifiers unbeaten under threat.

But Antonio Conte's side dominated after that goal and equalised through Alessandro Florenzi's close-range 73rd-minute effort.

The comeback was completed in the 82nd minute courtesy of a rasping Graziano Pelle strike into the top-right corner that ensured qualification for Croatia - who beat Malta 1-0 - while Norway finish third and are left to settle for a play-off spot.

Italy went close to going ahead inside 60 seconds as Pelle glanced a header narrowly wide from Mattia De Sciglio's left-wing cross.

The hosts continued to have the better of the first half, but fell behind courtesy of a fine strike from Tettey, who found the bottom-right corner with a fierce drive from the edge of the area after Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini failed to clear a left-wing free-kick.

Pelle should have levelled matters in the 35th minute when the Southampton striker somehow headed off target from point-blank range after Even Hovland misjudged a Riccardo Montolivo pass.

Roberto Soriano then forced Orjan Nyland to turn round the post a minute later as Italy piled on the pressure, with the Norway goalkeeper then tipping a Pelle header over and keeping out a swerving Florenzi effort from distance with a fine diving save.

Norway established more of a foothold in the game after the break, but were grateful to Nyland once more as he denied Eder with a one-on-one save in the 61st minute.

Both players were hurt in the collision and Eder was substituted and replaced by Sebastian Giovinco as a result.

Italy's pressure finally told as Florenzi pounced on some slack Norway defending to poke home at the far post from six yards out.

Florenzi looked to have added a second when he slotted in after being teed up by Antonio Candreva, only for the Roma winger to be denied by the offside flag.

However, that decision proved immaterial as Pelle settled the clash with a first-time volley past Nyland to extend Italy's unbeaten qualifying run to 50 games and secure top spot in the group.

My name is Ben Cullimore and it's been an absolute pleasure describing all of the action to you this evening. Until next time, goodbye!
  •

The referee blows his whistle for the final time, meaning that Italy will head to Euro 2016 as Group H winners, whilst Norway must now battle their way through the play-offs if they are to earn themselves a spot in France next year. The visitors look visibly shaken by what has happened but they can have few complaints, as the hosts did wonderfully well during a second half in which they looked far more effective going forward.

Norway push forward on one last attack as they desperately try to find a way past Italy's defence, which now comprises of every single available outfield player. Forren is eventually forced into thumping a lofted pass forward but it's easily dealt with by Bertolacci, who sends the ball bouncing out of play for a throw-in. That is surely that...
  • 90' + 2'

Candreva is left in acres of space just outside of the Norway penalty area, allowing him to take his time on the ball before unleashing a curling shot. It's well hit and beats Nyland but ends up flying narrowly wide of the far post before bouncing out for a goal kick.
  • 90' + 1'

Samuelsen picks up the ball on the right flank and sends an excellent curling cross into the heart of the box, but Bonucci is there to beat Henriksen before clearing the danger with a strong header away.

  • 86'

A Norway attack breaks down, allowing Italy to push forward once again. Florenzi initially charges down the right flank but quickly thinks better of it and spins before sending the ball back to Bonucci, who then slows down the play accordingly.
  • 84'

It's all Norway at the moment as they desperately push forward in numbers. Italy are now doing what the visitors did so well for 73 minutes and have camped themselves deep inside their own half of the pitch.

GOAL! Italy have taken the lead! Florenzi flies down the right wing and sends an excellent bouncing cross to Pelle, who, unmarked on the opposite side of the Norway penalty area, then beats Nyland with an excellent first-time volley. That is surely that for the visitors, who are set to feature in the play-offs.

Florenzi scores again, but it's offside! Candreva breaks past the Norway back line and meets the ball before teeing up the aforementioned goalscorer with a deft pass past Nyland, but the linesman's flag is immediately raised, much to their frustration.

Norway have immediately pushed further forward as they go on the front foot for the first time in the game. They now have 15 minutes to find a goal that they desperately need if they are to finish in an automatic qualifying spot.
  • 73'

    GoalAlessandro Florenzi
GOAL! Italy have equalised! A lovely cross by Giovinco finds Aleesami at the back post, and the left-back ends up making a terrible mistake by chesting the ball into the space in front of Nyland, allowing Florenzi to toe-poke a deft shot past the Norway goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
  • 72'

    SubstitutionAndrea Barzagli Antonio Candreva
Italy have decided to make their final change, and it's an attacking one, with Barzagli making way for Candreva.

    SubstitutionRiccardo Montolivo Andrea Bertolacci
Bertolacci comes on to replace Montolivo in Italy's second alteration of the night.
  • 66'

Norway enjoy their longest spell of possession as they patiently pass the ball around near the halfway line. The whistles from the Italy fans are growing louder as they become increasingly frustrated.
  • 64'

After another lengthy of period Italy possession, Norway break away quickly through Berget. The winger charges forward before teeing up King, who then sends the ball into the feet of Johansen, and the captain falls to the ground under a challenge from Chiellini. There are a few half-hearted shouts for a penalty but even the Celtic midfielder doesn't look convinced and immediately gets back to his feet.
  • 62'

    SubstitutionEder Sebastian Giovinco
Eder's day is done, and he gingerly limps off the pitch to be replaced by Giovinco.
  • 61'

Excellent save by Nyland! Eder breaks through the Norway defence to latch onto a deft header from Soriano, but the goalkeeper rushes out to smother the danger with a vital diving stop that leaves the Italy striker in a heap on the floor and in serious discomfort.
  • 60'

    SubstitutionAlexander Toft Søderlund Joshua King
King comes on to replace Soderlund in Norway's second change of the evening.
  • 59'

The Italy fans are getting progressively restless as they watch their side fail to find much joy in front of goal. As has been the case for the vast majority of the evening, they have dominated the possession but are doing very little with it.
  • 57'

Norway are finally able to break out of their own half of the pitch, with Aleesami embarking on a flying run down the left wing. He penetrates the Italy penalty area but is unable to find a way past the line of blue shirts in front, forcing him into playing the ball back to Johansen, who then unleashes an audacious long-range strike that flies well wide of the goal.
  • 55'

An Italy attack breaks down, allowing Soderlund to pick up the ball in the middle of the pitch before trying to tee up Henriksen. The striker's pass is poor, however, and can only find a blue shirt, allowing the hosts to come at the under-pressure visitors once again.
  • 53'

Again, Pelle holds up the ball well with his back to goal before spinning and teeing up Florenzi on the right-hand side of the penalty area, but the midfielder's low cross is easily cut out by Aleesami, who then flies away on a marauding run forward.
  • 51'

The ball pinballs around the edge of the Norway penalty area before Pelle brings it down well and sets up Soriano, who then immediately unleashes a curling, 20-yard strike. It's well hit but is sent straight into the hands of Nyland, who is easily able to hold onto the shot.
  • 48'

Darmian breaks down the right wing and into the Norway penalty area before sending a dangerous low cross into the middle of the box, where the ball bounces off the foot of Pelle and up into the air before Tettey is able to thump it away from danger with a vital clearance.
  • 46'

    And we're underway once again!
  •

The two teams are making their way back out onto the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
  •

It's been a thoroughly frustrating first half for Italy, who have absolutely dominated inside the visitors' half of the pitch but just can't seem to turn that possession into clear-cut chances on goal. Norway have done well to sit back and frustrate the hosts with their compact and well-organised defending, and they took their one chance at the other end of the pitch extremely well thanks to a fantastic strike from Tettey. As a result, they are currently heading to France as Group H winners, although anything could happen in the next 45 minutes...

    HALF-TIME: ITALY 0-1 NORWAY
  • 45' + 1'

Great save by Nyland! The resulting set-piece is half dealt with by the Norway defence, but again Italy are quick to regain possession. This time the aforementioned midfielder decides to unleash a rocket of a shot from 25 yards out, but the visitors' goalkeeper does extremely well to tip it away with an excellent diving stop.
  • 45'

The fourth official has indicated that there will be just one minute of added time.
  • 44'

Chance for Pelle! A poor attempted pass from Elabdellaoui can only find a blue shirt, allowing Italy to push forward on yet another dangerous attacking move. They work it out wide, where Florenzi then sends a curling cross into the middle of the box, but the aforementioned striker's looping header is tipped over the top of the crossbar and out for a corner.
  • 43'

Florenzi twists and turns on the right flank before cutting into the penalty area, where he goes down under a challenge from Berget. There are a few half-hearted appeals for a penalty from the Italy players near to the incident but the referee immediately shakes his head and waves play on.
  • 41'

Ball after ball is being flung into Norway's box, but each one is successfully dealt with by their under-pressure back four, which have dealt well with everything that has been thrown at them but are now looking rather rattled.
  • 39'

Italy are in full control inside the Norway half of the pitch but just can't seem to get into the visitors' penalty area. Again, Montolivo thumps a lofted pass over to Pelle, who has drifted out to the right wing, but the striker ends up catching Aleesami in the face, resulting in a free kick near the corner flag.
  • 37'

And now Soriano goes close! Italy earn themselves a corner on the right flank, which is half dealt with by the Norway defence. It's only cleared as far as the aforementioned Sampdoria midfielder, however, and he immediately unleashes an excellent long-range strike that Nyland does well to push round the post.
  • 35'

What a chance for Pelle! A beautiful curled pass from Montolivo takes Hovland by surprise and bounces over the head of the centre-back before reaching the aforementioned striker at the back post, but he ends up nodding his effort on goal just a yard or two wide of its intended target.
  • 33'

Johansen does well to pick up the ball in the middle of the pitch before charging forward, but he's quickly closed down by a group of four Italy players and is eventually dispossessed before he can spin and tee up Berget on the wing.
  • 31'

A scuffed clearance from Barzagli sends the ball flying up into the air and into the feet of Berget, who then breaks towards the byline before fizzing a pass across the face of goal. It's well hit but there's no one there to meet it, which allows Bonucci to thump it away from danger with a volleyed clearance on the edge of the six-yard box.
  • 29'

Soriano sends a thumping lofted pass into the feet of Pelle, who then unleashes a low, first-time strike that deflects off the foot of Hovland and out for a corner. The hosts decide to play it short but it's the set-piece is purely executed and is easily cut out by Soderlund, resulting in cries of disappointment from the home fans.
  • 27'

Italy are patiently passing the ball around inside the Norway half of the pitch, but they just can't seem to find a way through the clump of well-organised red shirts that are camped in front of them.
  • 25'

Norway are going to defend this lead with everything they've got, and they've already dropped deep as they look to keep a determined Italy side, who look shellshocked at conceding in such a manner, at bay.
  • 23'

    GoalAlexander Tettey
GOAL! Norway have taken the lead! Berget is fouled on the left flank, resulting in a free kick for the visitors in a dangerous position. It's flung into the middle of the box, where it deflects out of the penalty area and into the path of Tettey, who immediately unleashes an almighty half-volley from 20 yards out that flies through a sea of blue shirts before beating Buffon at the near post.
  • 22'

Another lofted pass is flung towards Pelle, but once again it's overhit and misses the striker. Italy seem to think that this is the best way to beat Norway's compact defence, but so far it hasn't worked.
  • 20'

After a few moments on the ground, Skjelbred gets to his feet once again and play resumes, but Elabdellaoui's cross from the following throw-in ends up looping out of play for a goal kick.
  • 19'

Skjelbred flies down the right wing and battles with De Sciglio before going down under a hefty challenge from the wing-back, leaving the Norwegian, who went off injured in his side's last game, in a heap on the floor and clutching his ankle.
  • 17'

Another lofted pass from inside the Italy half of the pitch flies over the top of the static Norway defence and into the path of Florenzi, but the midfielder's first touch is poor and ends up sending the ball bouncing out of play for a goal kick, much to his frustration.
  • 15'

Elabdellaoui embarks on a great run down the right flank before cutting inside and penetrating the Italy penalty area. He then tries to set up Soderlund with a thumping cross towards the back post, but it ends up bouncing off a blue shirt and out of the box.
  • 13'

Great chance for Eder! Montolivo sets up Darmian with a lovely volleyed pass forward before the Florenzi sends a dangerous cross into the middle of the penalty area, but it ends up missing the aforementioned striker by the narrowest of margins before Hovland sends the ball away from goal with a strong header at the far post.
  • 11'

Norway work the ball around nicely deep inside the Italy half of the pitch, with Berget finding space down the left flank. Soderlund then picks up the ball just outside of the Italy box before looking to shoot, but he's dispossessed from behind by Montolivo at the vital moment.
  • 9'

The ball pinballs around the edge of the Norway penalty area before Eder unleashes a sweetly-struck volley that deflects off the chest of Forren and out for a corner. The resulting set-piece is swung into the middle of the penalty area before meeting the aforementioned forward, but he ends up sending his audacious headed effort well wide of its intended target.
  • 7'

The hosts embark on a lengthy period of possession before Barzagli tries to find Pelle with a long pass forward, but it's completely mishit and bounces into the safe hands of Nyland.
  • 5'

Another misplaced attempted clearance by Hovland this time finds the feet of Soriano, who immediately pushes forward before unleashing a thumping strike from 20 yards out that ends up clearing the top of the crossbar by quite some distance.
  • 4'

Hovland loses the ball cheaply, allowing Italy to patiently work their way forward once again. Bonucci then launches a lofted pass over the top of the Norway defence and into the path of Pelle, but the striker mistimes his run and is immediately flagged offside.
  • 2'

Fantastic start by Italy! The hosts work the ball out wide to De Sciglio, who then curls an excellent cross right onto the head of Pelle. The big striker's effort beats Nyland but ends up flying just wide of the far post and out for a goal kick.
  • 1'

And we're off! Italy get us underway, attacking from left to right.
  •

The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
  •

  •

  •

There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
  •

A draw is unlikely to be enough for Norway, however, as they currently sit two points clear of Croatia but have an inferior goal difference to the third-place side, who are in action against minnows Malta this evening. Per-Mathias Hogmo doesn’t have recent history on his side either, as the visitors have only managed to beat Italy once in the last eight meetings between the two, with the most recent victory coming in a friendly in 2000. Current Azzurri coach Antonio Conte was part of the side that were defeated in Oslo 15 years ago, and he will be aiming to make sure that the same doesn’t happen tonight as they look to end a great qualifying campaign on a high.
  •

Thanks to last week’s 2-0 win against Malta, Norway are guaranteed at least a spot in the play-offs after enjoying an impressive qualifying campaign, but if they want to book their tickets to France today then they will have to become the first side to beat Italy in a Euro 2016 qualifier. The Azzurri are guaranteed a place in next year’s tournament thanks to a relatively comfortable victory away to Azerbaijan on Saturday, and they are now just one point away from finishing top of Group H.
