El Gent partía en esta UEFA Champions League como la cenicienta del grupo H pero los belgas acabaron cerrando este 9 de diciembre una clasificación histórica que ha convertido su paso por la máxima competición europea en un cuento de hadas.

Los belgas llegaban a su duelo ante un Zenit, que ya no se jugaba nada, dependiendo de sí mismos para lograr la clasificación y no desaprovecharon la oportunidad y acabaron venciendo por un meritorio 2-1 a unos rusos relajados y ni siquiera necesitaron el favor que el Olympique de Lyon les hizo con su sorprendente victoria en casa del Valencia.

A los 18 minutos apareció el hombre gol de los belgas, Depoitre para adelantar a su equipo con un bonito remate ante el que poco pudo hacer el cancerbero del equipo de San Pesterburgo. El gol dio alas a los locales pero Depoitre no tuvo tanto tino ante la portería en sus siguientes ocasiones y obligó a su equipo a remar y sufrir.

Como en todas las grandes gestas, el Gent tuvo que sufrir y Dzyuba hizo el empate mediada la primera mitad para obligar a los belgas a mirar el resultado que se daba en Mestalla, donde sorprendentemente el Lyon ganaba por 0-2.

Con la clasificación casi en la mano, Milicevic apareció para hacer el 2-1 definitivo y clasificar a su equipo por méritos propios y completar la gran gesta de la fase de grupos de esta Champions 2015-16.

  Gent were held to a 2-2 draw by Zulte Waregem in the Belgian Pro League, ending a run of four straight wins. Lasse Nielsen and Danijel Milicevic have shaken off knocks and are restored to the starting line-up by Heinz Vanhaezebrouck in place of Kenneth Saief, who drops to the bench, and Erik Johansson.

   

   

  With Zenit already through to the knockout stages with maximum points, second place is up for grabs in Group H. Gent will take it and become the first Belgian side to progress to the last 16 since Anderlecht in 2000-01 if they can better Valencia's result against Lyon.
