CSKA Moscú 0-2 Wolfsburgo: Ígor Akinféyev regala un doblete a André Schürrle

.

CSKA Moscow 0-2 Wolfsburg: Schurrle gives visitors vital three points

The Germans were left on the brink of securing a place in the knock-out stages after a tense win in the Russian capital while their opponents are eliminated from the competition

Wolfsburg remain on course to reach the Champions League round of 16 after substitute Andre Schurrle's double earned a 2-0 win away to CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.

Defeat for the Russian side eliminates them from the competition and they were the architects of their own downfall as goalkeeper and captain Igor Akinfeev's painful individual error saw him concede for the 36th European match in succession – with Schurrle the beneficiary.

Schurrle added a second in the 88th minute to make sure of all three points for the Bundesliga side.

The away win sees Wolfsburg climb to first place in Group B on nine points, two ahead of Manchester United and three ahead of PSV ahead of their match at Old Trafford later in the day.

CSKA remain bottom on four points and are left to contend for a place in the Europa League round of 32 by finishing third, provided PSV do not win at Old Trafford later on Tuesday.

A scrappy start to the game produced few decent chances, Bas Dost heading narrowly wide after meeting Christian Trasch's cross from the right flank seven minutes in.

CSKA were made to wait until the 26th minute for their first sight of goal, Alan Dzagoev sending Wolfsburg goalkeeper Diego Benaglio scrambling with a good shot from outside the area.

Naldo had to be alert five minutes later after his centre-back partner and fellow Brazilian Dante, receiving a heavy pass from left-back Marcel Schafer, gave the ball away in a dangerous area with Seydou Doumbia lurking.

Dost should have given the visitors the lead in the 33rd minute, but he failed to connect with Schafer's dangerous ball across the face of goal from the left.

Ahmed Musa then shot wide of the near post from inside the area, but it was Wolfsburg who looked the more threatening of the two sides, Max Kruse stinging the palms of Akinfeev with nine minutes remaining in the half, following good work by Schafer and Dost.

CSKA began the second half with more purpose, and Zoran Tosic came within inches of giving the hosts the lead in the 62nd minute, hitting the crossbar after being teed up by Dzagoev on the edge of the Wolfsburg area.

Failing to capitalise on their improved showing proved costly for CSKA when the visitors took the lead against the run of play in the 67th minute.

Left-back Kirill Nababkin failed to clear Dante's long ball, allowing Schurrle to gather possession on the right side of the penalty area and fire a shot across the face of goal which appeared to going wide, only for Akinfeev to make a mess of his attempted save and deflect the ball across the line.

The hosts' hopes were extinguished two minutes from time as Schurrle drilled home from just inside the area, eliminating CSKA from the competition and putting Wolfsburg in command of their fate ahead of a matchday six meeting with United.

Thank you all for joining out live coverage tonight from Russia. Good bye!

CSKA 0-2 WOLFSBURG. Die Wolfe take a big step towards the last 16 through super-sub Andre Schurrle, while sending the Army Men out of the competition. It was scoreless at the interval and the hosts looked the brighter of the two teams in the second half, but a goalkeeping error from Igor Akinfeev gifted Wolfsburg the lead and they never looked back.

    Goal Andre Schürrle
THREE POINTS FOR WOLFSBURG! There's no doubt about this one from Schurrle as he gets on the end of a pullback from Jung, who had made a spectacular run down the right, slotting a first-time shot back across goal and into the bottom corner. Akinfeev had no chance at this one with his momentum taking him against the grain of the shot.

    SubstitutionBas Dost Nicklas Bendtner
A final change from Wolfsburg, simply in an attempt to run more precious time off the clock as Nicklas Bendtner replaces Dost.
  • 85'

WAS THAT THE CHANCE? Musa is played through on a partial break and you would fancy him to have the beating of Naldo with his pace, but the centre-back does so well to stick with the run and get a crucial touch in to knock the ball away from harm!
  • 83'

Everyone but the back two are forward now for CSKA as they look to find an equaliser. Fernandes is providing good support on the overlap, but the hosts still can't pick out a good final ball and they are running out of time.
  • 81'

    SubstitutionMax Kruse Sebastian Jung
Sebastian Jung is on for his third Champions League appearance of the season to help provide a bit of stability and fresh legs in defence as Wolfsburg look to see this through to full time. Max Kruse is the one replaced.

PENALTY APPEALS DENIED! It's quite a stretch from Doumbia as he claims he was taken out by Guilavogui from behind, but the Frenchman got more of the ball if anything, with the Ivorian making the most of minimal contact.

If CSKA are to get back into the game and keep their hopes alive, they will have to do something they have yet to manage in this group stage: score a second-half goal. All four of their goals up to this point have come in the opening 45 minutes of their matches.
  • 75'

    SubstitutionKirill Nababkin Bibras Natcho
An attacking change from the hosts who will go to three at the back now as defender Nababkin is replaced by attacking midfielder Bibras Natcho. All hands on deck for CSKA in these final 15 minutes!
  • 73'

Redemption for Akinfeev? Well he can't take back the Wolfsburg goal, but he can at least prevent a second which he does here, running off his line smartly to clear the threat just ahead of Kruse's arrival. That was a lovely display of counter-attacking football from the visitors.
  • 71'

TWICE UNLUCKY! The Army Men cannot buy a goal this evening! They get back in attack, showing they won't go down without a fight. A good bit of play on the left sees a ball crossed into the danger area, but Arnold arrives ahead of Doumbia to guide the ball back to his keeper, who had to be alert there to hold on.
  • 69'

Akinfeev couldn't dig a deep enough hole to hide at the moment. It's another Champions League start without at clean sheet but this one is entirely on his shoulders. He can surely feel the glares of everyone in attendance!
  • 67'

    Goal Andre Schürrle
DREADFUL GOALKEEPING AND WOLFSBURG LEAD! A ball over the top is guided into the path of Schurrle by Dost, and the substitute tries his luck from a near impossible angle. His effort appears to be curling away from goal, but Akinfeev inexplicably sticks an arm out and redirects it into his own net!
  • 65'

Schurrle, only minutes after coming on, is down and in need of attention as he takes a shoulder to the chin. There was nothing in it there, but it certainly looked a painful knock for the German - and you can never be too careful with head injuries.
  • 63'

OFF THE WOODWORK! That's as close as you can come, really, without actually scoring! It's a massive letoff for Wolfsburg as Tosic's effort from the top of the area smacks up against the inside of the post, before bouncing right into the arms of a fortunate Benaglio. Everyone was expecting the net to bulge there!
  • 62'

    Yellow Card Pontus Wernbloom

    SubstitutionDaniel Caligiuri Andre Schürrle
A first change for Wolfsburg as Andre Schurrle arrives at the expense of Caligiuri. Can he prove to be the difference for the visitors?
  • 60'

CSKA are edging closer to a breakthrough, and Slutsky can hardly bear to watch. He rocks back and forth in his seat on the touchline as his side start to send more men forward in search of the elusive opener.
  • 58'

Good effort from Arnold! The midfielder has been terrific tonight for Wolfsburg and he takes matters into his own hands here, trying his luck from range to force Akinfeev into action for the first time in this second half. The keeper had to be alert, and was.
  • 56'

GOAL-SAVING TACKLE? Following a Wolfsburg corner, Musa shows a lovely bit of skill to elude two defenders before breaking with pace. He drives at the heart of defence before sliding a pass through for Doumbia, but Trasch reads it well to slide in and break up the move!
  • 54'

Perhaps the lack of goal-mouth action shouldn't come as much of a surprise. The reverse fixture in Germany finished in a 1-0 Wolfsburg victory with Julian Draxler, who is out injured tonight, scoring the lone goal.
  • 52'

CSKA have undoubtedly been the better side early in the second half, eager to get on the front foot and find a breakthrough. They really do need three points to give themselves a realistic shot of progressing, so it shouldn't be much longer before they throw caution to the wind.
  • 50'

CRUCIAL SAVE! Unconvincing from Benaglio as he fails to clear his lines following a CSKA corner. He knocks the ball into the path of Milanov who takes a touch and tries to catch the keeper out of position, but Benaglio does well to scramble over and redeem himself by making the save.
  • 49'

Lively start from CSKA! They pose a real threat in the final third as they push forward with real intent for once. Doumbia tries to chip a return pass through for Tosic, but Dante does just enough to intervene. The pressure stays on and Trasch is able to stick with Musa to force the ball behind for a corner.
  • 47'

There is one change to tell you about at the break, as Victor Vasin replaces Ignashevich at centre-half. It's a like for like change, but there didn't appear to be an injury which forced the experienced Russian international off.

Fellow countrymen Mario Fernandes and Naldo share a laugh as the two teams come back out of the tunnel for the second half. We are back underway in Moscow!

CSKA 0-0 WOLFSBURG. Nothing to separate the two sides after a 45 minutes bereft of any attacking quality. The visitors have produced the better moments in the final third, at least producing a few half chances, but at the other end Benaglio has yet to be called into action.
  • 45' + 1'

    HALF TIME!
  • 45'

The fourth official has indicated a minimum of one minute of stoppage time.
  • 44'

Tosic, who has been invisible throughout this first half, wins a free kick on the right with Schafer committing a foul. But as has been the case throughout thus far for CSKA, they give possession away cheaply from the ensuing free kick. It simply hasn't been good enough from them tonight.
  • 42'

Dreadful effort! Wolfsburg manage to win a corner and send some big bodies forward into the area from the back. The delivery from Schafer is poor, however, and then the follow-up volley from Caligiuri is sent sailing into the top row of the stadium.
  • 40'

There is still a good pace to the match as we enter the final five minutes of the first half. They are both looking to get on the front foot, starting to take one or two chances in committing men forward, but neither side has been able to produce the quality needed with their final balls.
  • 38'

The match has adopted a much livelier tempo over the last five minutes or so and it has led to an attractive period of play. Both sides enjoyed time on the front foot, with Akinfeev finally called into action. Perhaps there is a goal to be had before half time?
  • 36'

HE SHOULD BE SCORING FROM THERE! Terrific linkup play as Caligiuri picks out the run of Dost towards the near post. The Dutch striker tees up Kruse with a delicious back-heel, but his first-time effort is knocked behind smartly by Akinfeev!
  • 34'

SIDE NETTING! Well now it's starting to open up a bit! Encouraging piece of play from the hosts to get into attack. Musa is presented with the ball in the left channel and he moves into a pocket of space, but can't force Benaglio into a save at his near post! Best chance of the night for CSKA.
  • 32'

BETTER FROM THE VISITORS! It is their best attacking move of the night, pushing forward through a string of nifty passes. The final ball played into the area is an inviting one, and it comes glancing through the six-yard box, but sails right between Akinfeev and Dost as it runs harmlessly behind for a goal kick.
  • 30'

Leonid Slutsky has tampered with his team just a bit as they struggle to make waves in attack, with Musa drifting into a more central role to support Doumbia. The adjustment actually seems to have hurt CSKA as they now lack the pace out wide to test the Wolfsburg full-backs.
  • 28'

    Yellow Card Mario Fernandes
It is just a yellow card for Fernandes, and that does appear to be the right decision. It was incredibly untidy, but it lacked the malicious intent needed for the Italian referee to produce a red.
  • 27'

What is the referee going to do here?! Caligiuri runs with the ball in midfield before Fernandes arrives with a hard, two-footed challenge that sends him crashing to ground. The referee is quick to blow his whistle and run to the scene. He has an important decision to make here...
  • 25'

Not a bad effort from Dzagoev who narrowly misses the bottom corner with a strike from the top of the area. It comes at the end of a promising piece of buildup play from the hosts which should provide them with a bit of encouragement going forward.
  • 23'

It's becoming increasingly cagey with each passing minute. Wolfsburg appear more comfortable in possession, but they've hardly been able to offer much in attack themselves. Their early period of pressure has fizzled out, though they remain quite comfortable in defence.
  • 21'

The pace of Musa has been the only real outlet for CSKA up to this point. They have struggled to get their footing, offering next to no creativity, while Doumbia remains on an island in attack. The Ivorian was a doubt to partake, and at less than 100 per cent fitness he needs more help than he is currently getting.
  • 19'

It is interesting to note that Wolfsburg and CSKA met on this exact date (November 25) back in 2009, in Russia. The Moscow club came out on top on that day to the tune of a 2-1 scoreline, with Tomas Necid and Milos Krasic helping them battle back after Edin Dzeko had given the Bundesliga outfit the lead. It was in the 19th minute that Wolfsburg had opened the scoring, and took the lead with them into the interval.
  • 17'

    Yellow Card Ahmed Firaz Moosa
Musa goes into the book, the first player to be issued a caution tonight for either side. He showed good determination to track back, but it was a true forward's tackle from the Nigerian as he came nowhere close to getting the ball as he hacks Guilavogui to ground.
  • 15'

Wolfsburg have lost four of their five away games in the Champions League – including a 2-1 defeat against CSKA Moscow in the 2009/10 group stages – the only exception coming against Besiktas in November 2009 (3-0). They do not appear at all phased by this through the opening quarter-of-an-hour, however, in fact looking quite capable of breaking this trend.
  • 13'

The tempo has slowed drastically as CSKA start to see more of the ball. They are trying to get everyone a touch of it and help settle the nerves, which clearly have been getting the better of them in the early stages, in what could well be considered a must-win game.
  • 11'

One touch too many! Caligiuri wins a free kick on the left and the resulting delivery into the penalty area is dealt with by the hosts, who break on the counter. Musa shows incredible pace to run half the length of the pitch, but doesn't lay it off soon enough as he holds too long, allowing Trasch to intervene.
  • 9'

This has been quite a surprising start from CSKA, who have yet to be able to get a hold of the ball. They're giving it away so carelessly inside their own end when they do win it back, having yet to string more than a couple of passes together. Leonid Slutsky is visibly frustrated on the touchline.
  • 7'

DELIGHTFUL BALL! That's the exact sort of service Bas Dost thrives off! Wolfsburg lull CSKA to sleep with their passing, when out of nothing Christian Trasch plays a long, diagonal ball over the top to pick out Dost. The striker beats his marker but sends a header wide of the near post!
  • 5'

The visitors continue to enjoy the bulk of possession in the opening stages, with CSKA struggling to win it back. Hecking will be pleased with the amount of possession his side have had, but would unquestionably like to see them create a bit more with it.
  • 3'

Wolfsburg have started encouragingly, eager to attack on the counter as is usually the case for a Dieter Hecking coached side. They have adopted a good tempo in possession, but are lacking options when they break into the final third.

CSKA get us underway, kicking left to right!
  •

Dieter Hecking has named the same starting XI which trounced Werder Bremen 6-0 on the weekend, opting not to tamper with a winning formula. As a result, Ricardo Rodriguez is relegated to a spot on the substitute's bench for Wolfburg for the first time in the group stage, with Marcel Schafer making his first start of this campaign in the competition. Julian Draxler misses out through injury, while Andre Schurrle starts on the bench.
  •

Seydou Doumbia has recovered late from injury to partake in the match. It is terrific news for the hosts to have their prolific Ivorian striker leading the lines, flanked by Ahmed Musa and Zoran Tosic. Bibras Natcho is dropped to the bench to make room, after featuring in the defeat to Krylya Sovetov on the weekend.

    CONFIRMED TEAM NEWS:
  •

Wolfsburg’s situation is much more murky as we enter the final two rounds of matches. There is no result across the two Group B games tonight that would clinch their place in the next round, or see them eliminated from contention. The fate of Dieter Hecking’s side will be determined on the final matchday as a result, but they can give themselves a big boost by taking as little as a point from this match – something they have yet to do on their travels in this group stage.
  •

With Group B remaining so closely contested up to this point, the only thing we know for sure is that CSKA would be eliminated with a loss tonight. A draw would keep their hopes alive, albeit only just, while a victory would leave them in control of their own destiny on the final matchday. No order of finish has been ruled out with two matches remaining, which has set the scene for a terrific conclusion in Group B.
