Chelsea 1-1 Stoke City: Diouf cancels out Traore stunner

Chelsea 1-1 Stoke City: Diouf cancels out Traore stunner

The Blues' 20-year-old striker, filling in for Diego Costa, netted in the first half, though the visitors rallied to claim a deserved point at Stamford Bridge on Saturday

Mame Biram Diouf secured Stoke City a deserved 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge with an equalising header five minutes from full-time in the Premier League on Saturday.

Diouf, restored to the starting line-up by manager Mark Hughes, nodded home in the closing stages, cancelling out Bertrand Traore's first-half strike to earn Stoke a first ever Premier League point on Chelsea's home ground.

The defending Premier League champions were without Diego Costa - who has scored or assisted 12 goals in his last 10 Premier League appearances - due to a tendon injury, but Traore ensured his absence was not too sorely felt with a searing effort in the 39th minute.

Stoke played some impressive football in the second half as the game opened up, but Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois proved difficult to beat.

After Marko Arnautovic and Xherdan Shaqiri were denied by the Belgian, Diouf – who missed a pair of chances in the first half – finally breached the hosts' backline in the 85th minute with his first strike for the Potters since September.

he draw leaves Stoke in seventh position, while Chelsea sit 10th following a seventh draw in 12 Premier League matches since Guus Hiddink's return to the helm.

With one eye perhaps on the Champions League last 16 second leg at home to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, Hiddink opted to name Cesc Fabregas on the bench and deploy John Obi Mikel in midfield, while Baba Rahman returned and Willian was restored to the line-up due to Costa's enforced absence.

Chelsea may have been ruing the loss of the Spain international when Traore failed to take advantage of a fourth-minute cross from Cesar Azpilicueta, and the defending Premier League champions' early momentum ebbed away.

Ibrahim Afellay forced Courtois into a diving save with a powerful 20-yard strike, before his brilliant cross with the outside of his right boot following a rapid break was steered narrowly over by Diouf in the 21st minute.

The Senegalese striker was unable to hit the target when presented with his next opportunity, scuffing wide after another counter-attacking move, and the deadlock was broken six minutes before the interval.

Traore was afforded space 20 yards from goal by the Stoke defence and he used it to drill a brilliant effort inside the far post.

There were chances at both ends within five minutes of the restart. Arnautovic's swinging drive was palmed away by Courtois, before Eden Hazard's cross-goal strike arrowed wide.

Stoke continued to threaten and came close to a 59th-minute equaliser when Courtois got down to his left to parry Shaqiri's effort behind.

Chelsea responded well as the game opened up, but Jack Butland was equal to efforts from Willian and Gary Cahill.

Traore made way for Loic Remy with 22 minutes remaining, and Stoke took control of possession as they stepped up their attempt to find an equaliser.

Referee Mark Clattenberg gave Erik Pieters a reprieve by not showing him a second yellow card for a foul on Oscar, and Stoke pulled level with five minutes remaining.

Diouf headed the ball into the back of the net after Courtois failed to adequately clear Shaqiri's cross, but the Belgian produced a stoppage-time save to deny substitute Bojan a last-gasp winner.

Live Commentary

And that will do it from Stamford Bridge as Chelsea are pegged back late on to drop two points. Traore's fantastic goal in the first half seemed to be enough, but with five minutes to go, the previously profligate Diouf converted a header to bring the visitors back into the game. A goal and a point apiece at the end of things here. That's all the time we have, thanks for tuning in!
  • 90'+2'

A series of crosses are pumped into the box, but Stoke repel them all. There is a sense of frustration around the ground and it's no surprise why - the game was there for the taking for the hosts.
  • 90'

Chelsea push bodies forward in hopes of finding a late goal to retake the lead, but Stoke know their task now, and have almost every player back defending around their own box.
  • 90'

    SubstitutionMarko Arnautović Stephen Ireland
Arnautovic has been withdrawn for Ireland late on.
  • 88'

Time is running out now for Chelsea, who have been floored by this late setback. They looked comfortable for so long, but did not get the second goal to really kill this game off.
  • 86'

SubstitutionMame Biram Diouf José Luis Sanmartín Mato
Diouf will depart now with a burst of applause from the visiting fans. On comes Joselu.
  • 85'

    Goal Mame Biram Diouf
STOKE HAVE TIED IT UP! Third time's the charm for Diouf, who is in the right place at the right time to head home a poor parry on a cross from Courtois, and suddenly Chelsea's best laid plans are undone!
  • 83'

Chelsea starting to surrender a little bit of possession here as they seek to eliminate risks in their play with time starting to run out. Hiddink is closing in on a record 12 games unbeaten to start his managerial tenure.
  • 82'

SubstitutionNemanja Matić Francesc Fàbregas i Soler
Fabregas will get a late taste of the action as he replaces Matic.
  • 81'

SAVE FROM BUTLAND! Willian sets Loftus-Cheek on his way with a clever ball down the blind side of the defender, and the substitute elects to go for goal from an angle, but the keeper covers his near post well.
  • 79'

Even with just a one-goal advantage in the bag, Chelsea are closing out this game with some ease here. Stoke have shown glimpses of promise in the second half, but Courtious hasn't been tested enough.
  • 77'

Bojan's first action nearly carves Chelsea apart, but the offside flag saves the hosts as the former Roma man looked to break through down the left. A very narrow decision that could have gone either way.
  • 75'

    SubstitutionGlenn Whelan Bojan Krkíc Pérez
And that will be Whelan's last action of the game as Highes decides to go for a more attacking option in Bojan. It's starting to get to that time where it's now or never for the visitors.
  • 73'

    Yellow Card Glenn Whelan
Loftus-Cheek has the ball and tries to turn Whelan, who is draped all over his back. The Stoke midfielder eventually fouls the substitute, and the referee blesses him with a yellow card.
  • 71'

Stoke are starting to let Chelsea have a little too much of the ball, and that's forcing them into some needless challenges that concede free-kicks. Hiddink's men don't look too troubled out there.
  • 69'

Hazard is off down the right-hand side with Wollscheid in hot pursuit. The defender appeared to foul the winger down the flank, but the referee instead calls for a goal-kick, to the frustration of the fans.
  • 68'

    SubstitutionBertrand Isidore Traore Loïc Rémy
Traore does indeed depart, with Remy on.
  • 67'

It looks like Chelsea are preparing a second substitution, and word is that Traore will be the man to be replaced. He's certainly done his job tonight, filling in for Diego Costa with distinction.
  • 65'

Apart from that one chance for Shaqiri, Stoke haven't asked enough questions of the Chelsea defence in the second half. There's still only one goal in this, but a second for the Blues may be game over.
  • 63'

    SubstitutionEden Hazard Ruben Loftus-Cheek
Hazard will be risked no further and is replaced by Loftus-Cheek.
  • 63'

Some silky footwork from Cahill, who has Muniesa for company, but eventually twists and turns past the defender. However, by that point, Butland has positioned himself well, and saves the Chelsea man's eventual low effort.
  • 61'

Stoke fail to profit from a free header off a corner, and Chelsea spring forward on the break. Willian has it on the right side, and he lets fly with an effort that's a little too hot to handle for Butland, who parries.
  • 59'

OUTSTANDING PLAY ALL AROUND! Shaqiri gets the ball in a pocket of space and suddenly accelerates, taking him past two players and into the box. He fires a fine low finish across the body of the goalkeeper, but a late hand from the Belgian diverts it around the post!
  • 57'

Arnautovic nearly gets the step on the Chelsea defence, but Cahill is across to cover. Chelsea beak almost immediately, but there's a double Brazilian blunder - both Oscar and Willian fail to make inroads down the left flank against a relatively undermanned defence.
  • 55'

Chelsea are the side to have settled quicker into the second half, and their passing is quite accurate when transitioning from their own half into the opposition sectors. Stoke are a little slower on the ball when they do have it.
  • 53'

    Yellow Card Erik Pieters
The active Willian is chopped down by Pieters, who is duly booked.
  • 52'

Hiddink would love a second goal here to give his side a cushion. With a massive game against PSG in the Champions League to come, where they have a deficit to overturn, the sooner Chelsea can wrap this up the better.
  • 50'

Good chance on the break that is started by Willian, who drives past his immediate opponent and into acres of space. He sprays the ball left to Hazard, who takes a while to evade the attention of Wollscheid, before lashing a cross-cum-shot off the mark.
  • 48'

No changes at the break from either manager. Stoke needn't be too disheartened at having a lead to chase, but they do need to be more clinical with the opportunities that they create for themselves.
  • 46'

    Off we go again.
  •

And that will do it for the first half, as Chelsea take a 1-0 lead into the break. Traore's sumptuous long-range strike has been the difference here, but Stoke have also missed two great chances to put their names on the board, with Diouf the guilty party both times. It's been a relatively even game, with plenty of attacking intent. Stay tuned for the restart in just a bit.
  • 45'

Yellow Card Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Júnior
Imbula beats Oscar on the turn, but is flattened by the Brazilian with a sliding challenge, and he becomes the recipient of the first booking of the game.
  • 45'

That's Traore's fourth goal in five appearances for Chelsea this season, but no doubt it will be the one that he remembers the most. Matic went over to the sidelines to receive treatment, but he's soon back with us.
  • 43'

Willian tries to drive home Chelsea's momentum by motoring from the right side into a central position and letting fly, but he slices it well wide of the mark and Stoke can breathe again.
  • 41'

Stoke must be kicking themselves that they did not close Traore down sooner at the edge of the area. It's not like he was turning on the ball with any real urgency. Those missed chances from Diouf look costly now.
  • 39'

    Assist Nemanja Matić
Superb from Matic, who won the ball off Afellay and played Traore into space.
  • 39'

    Goal Bertrand Isidore Traore
MAGNIFICENT FROM TRAORE! The attacker goes one way outside the box, and has the time to turn back in the other direction onto his left foot, and he cracks a stunner high into the far side!
  • 38'

Muniesa gives the ball away sloppily, allowing Oscar the chance to stride into Stoke territory with one man in support. However, Wollscheid covers for his defensive partner and blocks the shot.
  • 37'

Poor again from Traore! Shaqiri does excellently to stride down the right and stand a cross up to the unmarked striker at the back post, but his volley is scuffed badly, bouncing wide of the post when Courtois should have had no chance. Still, Arnautovic nearly cleans up the mess just before the ball went out with a volleyed attempt of his own!
  • 35'

Cameron is dispossessed by Hazard, and the Belgian goes sprinting towards goal, but he's crowded out by three players and his eventual pass to Traore is easily intercepted by another covering defender.
  • 33'

You can just sense that we're getting closer to more genuine chances. There's a snappiness to this game, and all that's really been missing is that inch of space inside the area to get a shot away.
  • 31'

Chelsea with their best move of the game as Oscar and Hazard combine to tee up Traore inside the area. Muniesa blocks his shot, but it falls kindly to Willian on the far side, only for his follow-up effort to be thwarted by the defence as well.
  • 29'

Stoke continue to look the better of the two teams at the moment, and they're showing a propensity to win more of the 50-50's in midfield. The crowd is trying to roar Chelsea onto greater things.
  • 27'

Shaqiri flights in a decent free-kick, which Cameron attacks, but the defender can't keep it on target. Moments later, he's down on the deck after taking a whack on the face with the ball.
  • 25'

You can tell that Chelsea are missing the presence of someone like Costa up top. Traore has barely touched the ball in a meaningful position here, with most of the good play occuring via the team-mates behind him.
  • 23'

The game is stopped with two players down on the deck, and it's Afellay who looks like he's in more urgent need of medical attention. He's getting two of his fingers taped together, but he should be fine to continue.
  • 21'

STOKE SHOULD SCORE! Afellay orchestrates a wonderful move down the right, latching onto a pass down the left-hand side and hooking a cross in for Diouf with the outside of his boot, but the striker can't keep his effort down!
  • 19'

Afellay takes aim from the outside of the box but the shot is at a good height for Courtois, who makes the save. He's starting to get more involved in this one, the former Barcelona man.
  • 17'

A good tempo to the first half so far, with both teams trading spells in possession. Stoke have just had a tad more cutting edge though, and Chelsea need to keep on their toes defensively.
  • 15'

This is a lot better from Chelsea, who are starting to wrest control of this game away from Stoke. Azpilicueta puts in a lovely cross to the back post, but Hazard is unable to generate any power on his header.
  • 13'

There was a chance for Chelsea there as a great cross was sent into the area by Oscar, but Muniesa heads it away. Moments later, Willian lays the ball off for Mikel at the top of the box, but he skies it.
  • 11'

Shaqiri is looking lively in the opening exchanges. He's started on the right and will cut inside onto his stronger left foot almost instantly, which opens up avenues for his team-mates to move into space.
  • 9'

Chelsea are struggling a bit to get on the ball here, which is causing a little frustration in certain sections of the support. No real goal-scoring chances as yet though, with most of the play concentrated in the middle.
  • 7'

Stoke have started this match with some good possession, but they allow their defensive line to get caught too high up, and they're lucky that a pass through to Willian is just over-hit.
  • 5'

Slightly sloppy from Afellay, who is found by a good ball down the right on the overlap, but doesn't get his head up in time and the play ends. Stoke not looking uncomfortable here.
  • 3'

Not much happening in the opening exchanges here. It's going to be interesting to see Traore up top for the home side, and I think that we might see a little more freelancing from the Chelsea front four, with the likes of Willian and Hazard switching positions with the 20-year-old.
  • 1'

    Here we go!
  •

Mark Hughes makes two changes from his team's victory over Newcastle last time out. In comes Muniesa, with Phil Bardsley sitting out with an injury. Also returning to the side is Mame Diouf, who will head the Potters' attack in place of Jonathan Walters.
  •

A tendon complaint has kept Diego Costa out of this one, with Willian returning to the side in place of the Spaniard. That means that Bertrand Traore will shift further forward to lead the line for the hosts. Cesc Fabregas is also replaced by John Obi Mikel in the centre of the park.
  •

Stoke subs: Dionatan, Ireland, Haugaard, Bojan, Walters, Crouch, Joselu.

Stoke have lost on each of their seven trips to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League era, scoring only twice in the process, and have won only one of their last 14 trips to London in the league. However, Chelsea have drawn four of their last six at home, and have conceded in their last seven on their own patch - although they have the chance to win four straight in the top flight for the first time in nearly a year.
  •

Stoke are in a patch of decent form, winning three straight games to climb within touching distance of the European places. Five points separate them from fifth place Manchester United. Goals have been a problem for the Potters though, with only five teams in the top flight hitting the back of the net less times than them this season (30 scored).
  •

Hiddink is unbeaten in his first 11 Premier League games since taking over from Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, and if he avoids defeat here, he will have the record for the longest streak without losing for any manager at the start of his tenure at an EPL club. With a victory, the Blues can move as high as seventh, leapfrogging tonight's opponents in the process.

Hello and welcome to our live commentary of the Premier League match between Chelsea and Stoke at Stamford Bridge. It's not often that the Blues are looking up at the Potters in the table, but a strong run of form under Guus Hiddink has seen the Londoners edge back into the top half of the table.
