Borussia Monchengladbach 1-2 Manchester City: Штрафной удар Агуэро приносит победу Aguero penalty secures late win for Pellegrini's men

Аргентинец забивает со штрафной отметки и гости вырывают три очка. Харт играет по-геройски и не дает Гладбаху забить.

The Argentine converted from the spot late in the game as the visitors came from behind to land the three points, with Joe Hart performing heroics to keep Gladbach at bay

Sergio Aguero broke Borussia Monchengladbach's hearts from the penalty spot as Manchester City secured a 2-1 comeback win in Champions League Group D on Wednesday.

Following on from a chastening 4-1 Premier League loss at Tottenham on Saturday, Manuel Pellegrini's team were largely woeful defensively as Monchengladbach thrilled a fervent crowd on their first home match in Europe's top competition for 37 years.

City were indebted to Joe Hart, who brilliantly denied forward Raffael on a number of occasions – most notably from a 19th-minute spot-kick..

A deserved and stylish opening goal arrived nine minutes into the second half from Lars Stindl, heightening the pressure on City who, like the hosts, lost their opening group match..

Nicolas Otamendi endured much of the Bundesliga side's attacking storm but found respite to net a 65th-minute equaliser..

His compatriot Aguero suffered frustrations similar to those of Raffael in front of goal from open play but held his nerve from 12 yards in the 90th minute, sending Yann Sommer the wrong way after being fouled by Fabian Johnson.

Probing for early vulnerability in a City defence that proved so porous at White Hart Lane, Johnson drove towards goal and skilfully laid off for Raffael, who sliced it off target.

It was a thrilling, if cavalier, start to the contest and City should have taken a fifth-minute lead when Raheem Sterling cut a low ball across from the left and Sommer denied Aguero from point-blank range.

Patrick Herrmann shot wide on a lightning counter-attack and Raffael passed up an even better opportunity to put the hosts in front, blasting his penalty too close to Hart following Otamendi's clumsy foul on the Brazilian forward.

Hart should have had an assist to his name moments later when Aguero latched onto his raking ball downfield but fired past the post.

The Argentina international manufactured space to have an attempt in the 29th minute but the result was the same, with Sommer untroubled.

A shambolic and overly exposed City defence were indebted to Hart as he superbly frustrated Raffael twice more before the break, while Monchengladbach midfielder Stindl was booked for a dive in the box despite replays suggesting Fernandinho made contact.

Yaya Toure, substituted with a tight hamstring at Tottenham and wholly ineffective here, was replaced by Fernando for the start of the second half as Raffael and Hart resumed their duel.

The outcome was familiar – the England goalkeeper excelling himself after Raffael sprung City's flimsy high line - but Hart was finally beaten in the 54th minute.

City left-back Aleksandar Kolarov allowed Julian Korb ample room on the right to pick out Stindl, who swept home a low finish.

The visiting centre-backs found the ideal way to atone for their ordeal at the other end by combining to equalise 11 minutes later.

Martin Demichelis looked to have turned Kevin De Bruyne's corner over the line and Korb shovelled the ball as far as Otamendi, whose rasping shot deflected into the net off Andreas Christensen.

Pellegrini's side carried by far the greater threat in the closing stages but had to wait until the death to seal all three points, with Johnson the villain after a corner from substitute Jesus Navas was sloppily dealt with.

A cool Aguero settled matters to leave City level on points with Sevilla and three behind their matchweek one conquerors Juventus, with Monchengladbach desperately unlucky to not get off the mark.

Thanks very much for joining me this evening for this incredibly entertaining encounter. Manchester City left it very late but they become the first English side to win away against Borussia Mönchengladbach. I've been Chris Baker and I'll see you again next time.

Sevilla at home and away will once again test the credentials of Manchester City in club football's elite competition. They will need to improve massively from a defensive point of view and hope that Vincent Kompany is back as soon as possible.
  •

Pellegrini will be delighted with the grit and determination his player's showed in the face of adversity. Manchester City really struggled at times and have their goalkeeper to thank on numerous occasions but they remained calm. Eventually their superior quality shone through and Gladbach buckled after coming under some intense pressure.

It is hard not to feel a degree of sympathy for Borussia Mönchengladbach who contributed a great deal to this enthralling encounter. The German side worked tremendously hard but simply couldn't weather the City storm that gathered pace as soon they got it back to 1-1.
  •

Manchester City have been criticised heavily for their recent results and performances but they showed real character to come back from a goal down. They were by far the better side after going behind and just about deserved their victory in the end.
  • 90' + 6'

That injury has added a considerable amount of time on at the end of this game. City look to run the clock down and they've done it. Full time Gladbach 1-2 Manchester City. A vital three points for the English champions.
  • 90' + 4'

    SubstitutionRaheem Sterling Pablo Zabaleta
  • 90' + 3'

In the act of making the save Sommer is clattered by his own player Wendt who seems to have whacked his knee into the face of his goalkeeper. Blood is pouring from the keeper's nose right now. Gladbach have made all their permitted substitutions.
  • 90' + 2'

Two nearly becomes three but Aguero is denied a second goal by a moment of brilliance by Sommer. De Bruyne was released down the left by Sterling who squared the ball across the six yard box.

  • 90'

GOAL! Aguero makes no mistake from twelve yards! Sommer goes the wrong way and the little magician has surely won it for his team. Great penalty under extreme pressure.
  • 89'

PENALTY TO CITY! Aguero goes down under the challenge of Johnson and the referee has now hesitation in awarding the second spot kick of the night. No arguments there, clear foul.
  • 87'

    Yellow CardÁlvaro Domínguez
  • 87'

Hart pumps the ball up in the direction of Navas, who does well to help it on towards Aguero. The City striker spins his man before being rather cynically fouled by Dominguez who rightly picks up a yellow card for his troubles.
  • 85'

OVER! Hahn has a real opportunity after being picked out at the back post but his half volley is deflected over for a corner. City were out of position defensively there and rather got away with that.
  • 84'

    SubstitutionMahmoud Dahoud Havard Nordtveit
  • 83'

CHANCE! Navas takes on his man and beats him all ends up before hanging it up invitingly at the back post. Sterling is the City man to attack it and makes good contact with his header but it is just over the bar.
  • 81'

SHOT! Aguero receives the ball on the top of the box from De Bruyne's crisp pass but the City centre forward drags it wide. He looks short of confidence in front of goal at the moment, which is so unlike the prolific striker.
  • 79'

I think if you offered Gladbach a draw right now they'd bite your hand off, City are all over them like a bad suit at the moment. Kolarov looks to fizz the ball into the near post where Aguero waits but it is deflected out for a corner. De Bruyne's delivery is deep and finds Otamendi but he can't direct his shot on target. Only one team in it since the equaliser. Can they find a winner?
  • 78'

    SubstitutionJulian Korb Ibrahima Traore
  • 77'

OVER! De Bruyne, who is becoming increasingly influential since Silva's departure, does well to hold the ball up before laying it off to Fernandinho. The Brazilian international looks to bend it into the top corner but hits it just too high.
  • 75'

The away side are really turning the screw now and Aguero works the ball onto his usually trusty right foot on the byline. The City striker unleashes an effort that is cut out by Dominguez.
  • 73'

CHANCE! City have suddenly started to win the second balls. On this occasion Sterling finds himself in space and puts in a teasing cross that Sommer palms away from the onrushing Aguero. The ball eventually finds its way to Navas who hits a shot that is well blocked.
  • 72'

    SubstitutionPatrick Herrmann Andre Hahn
  • 71'

SHOT! Fernando lets fly from all of twenty yards but his low drive doesn't test the reflexes of Yann Sommer in the Gladbach goal. After being on the backfoot for much of the game, the visitors are looking for a big finish.
  • 69'

De Bruyne has shifted out onto the left wing since the substitution and beats the full back Korb with consummate ease. His cut back just eludes Aguero, who was ready to pounce.
  • 67'

    Yellow CardJulian Korb
  • 67'

Navas has been very bright since coming on and has seen plenty of the ball. The jet-heeled winger has injected some fresh impetus into the City attack.

    GoalNicolás Otamendi
  • 65'

    SubstitutionDavid Silva Jesús Navas González
GOAL! 1-1 Otamendi draws City level. Demichelis' initial effort looks to have crossed the line but it was not given after being hacked away but it drops to the other City centre half who half volleys it into the back of the net. Game on!
  • 63'

De Bruyne and Sagna look to combine down the right hand side but the tireless Hermann does his defensive duties and snuffs out the threat.
  • 61'

Korb gets caught out by the trickery of Sterling and hauls his man to the ground. Kolarov whips the ball into the box but once again the set piece delivery does not beat the first man.
  • 59'

The delivery from both City full backs has been extremely disappointing. They have both found themselves in excellent positions but have failed to find that killer ball. Jesus Navas may be introduced in the not too distant future to provide some extra width and incision.
  • 57'

For a team with aspirations of challenging for honours on four fronts it will be of great concern to City fans how much the team is missing Vincent Kompany and to a lesser extent, the much improved Mangala.
  • 55'

WIDE! Silva is close to smuggling an equaliser in for City. Sagna's deep cross was flicked on by Sterling but Spanish playmaker couldn't squeeze the ball in at the near post.
  • 54'

    AssistJulian Korb
  • 54'

    GoalLars Stindl
GOAL! Stindl slots the ball home to finish a superb sweeping Gladbach attacking move. Korb gets in behind Kolarov and shows great awareness to cuts it back to Stindl who does the necessary. No more than the hosts deserve.
  • 51'

Fernando shows why he has been brought on with an excellent last ditch tackle. Otamendi and Demichelis parted like the Red Sea which almost allowed Stindl to profit but the defensive midfielder was in the right place at the right time.
  • 49'

City are close to unpicking the Gladbach defence but once again the home side defend it well. De Bruyne had got the move going with a cute reverse pass into the path of Silva who laid it onto Fernandinho, who in turn found Kolarov who looked to smash the ball across the face of the goal but it is hacked away from danger.
  • 47'

SAVE! It didn't take Raffael and Hart long resume their personal duel. The Glabach striker sprung the City offside trap and from a tight angle Hart was tested once again but was equal to the challenge.
  • 46'

    SubstitutionYaya Touré Fernando
  • 46'

City have made a change at the break with Yaya Toure being replaced in midfield by Fernando. Toure, didn't look at all comfortable for the majority of the first half and seemed to still be struggling with the injury that forced him off against Tottenham at the weekend.
  •

You wonder how fit Pablo Zabaleta is because Manuel Pellegrini must surely be contemplating bringing him on for one of Otamendi and Demichelis? As a central defensive partnership they look all at sea. Putting Zabaleta on would allow them to shift Sagna into the middle of the defence.
  •

Gladbach will be very disappointed to have spurned the opportunity to go ahead from the penalty spot but you have to give Joe Hart tremendous credit. If they do not go on to win this game they will point to the decision not to give them a second spot kick and book Stindl as a massive turning point.
  •

This has been far from a boring 0-0. So often Champions League games can be tight, tense and tactical affairs but this has been anything but with both teams attacking with careless abandon. But for some heroic goalkeeping from Joe Hart and some wayward finishing from Sergio Aguero it could easily be 4-4.
  • 45'

Half time here at Borussia Park. Somehow it is 0-0. A rarity in modern football with no injury time added on.
  • 44'

OVER! De Bruyne's outswinging corner is met by the head of Fernandinho but he gets his timing all round and the ball loops harmlessly over the crossbar.
  • 42'

SAVE! And in the end it is a fairly straightforward one for Sommer. Aguero had chipped the ball into the danger zone where it was headed on by Silva. Sterling arrived at the back post but couldn't generate the necessary power to trouble the goalkeeper.
  • 40'

After being under the cosh for long spells in this first half, it is the home side who won't want the opening fourty-five minutes to end. Pellegrini's men look incredibly shaky at the back and need to regroup.
  • 38'

In the aftermath of the Hermann shot the ball fell to Stindl who appeared to be fouled in the box by Fernandinho. But instead of giving Gladbach a second penalty the referee gives the midfielder a yellow card for diving. Very harsh decision that.
  • 37'

    Yellow CardLars Stindl
  • 36'

CHANCE! Raffael dances past several weak City challenges before laying the ball off to Hermann who is totally free in the penalty area. He sidefoots it towards the far corner but an outstretched arm from Hart keeps it at 0-0.
  • 34'

SAVE! Hart is on hand to deny Raffael with a tremendous block. The City back lined had been breached far too easily tonight. Demichelis and Otamendi are all over the place with their defensive positioning at the moment.
  • 32'

The hosts have looked threatening whenever they have had the opportunity to go forward but since the penalty save, they simply haven't had enough of the ball to mount any sort of pressure on the City goal.
  • 30'

Two chances in quick succession for the away side. First, Aguero created a chance of his own by sprinting down the left hand channel but couldn't direct his left footed strike on target. Then once again Sterling gets in behind but his low cross was rather aimless.
  • 28'

Nearly another goldent chance for Aguero but this time it is good defending rather than poor finishing that denies him. Silva threaded a lovely ball through to De Bruyne who looked to cut the ball back but it was well dealt with by Dominguez.
  • 26'

Otamendi and Demichelis have not covered themselves in glory so far this evening but they have been given precious little cover by Yaya Toure and Fernandinho in front of them. Sagna then is played down the right but his cross is overhit and easily cleared.
  • 24'

Gladbach are now seemingly happy to sit deep, get men behind the ball, hoping to invite City onto them. Then whenever they get the opportunity they look to counter attack with tremendous pace, almost like an away team.
  • 22'

How on earth this game is still 0-0 is simply beyond me?! There have been chances at either end but once again in the Champions League, Joe Hart has come to the rescue for Manchester City.

    Penalty saveJoe Hart
SAVED BY HART! Wonderful save from England's no.1! The City keeper guessed right and parried the ball away to safety.
  • 20'

CHANCE! Not content with saving the penalty and then dealing with the resulting corner. Hart puts Aguero through on goal with a superb kick out. The Argentinian international races clear but drags his effort wide. That is now two chances that he would usually have rattled in that have been missed.
  • 19'

    Yellow CardNicolás Otamendi
  • 17'

PENALTY TO GLADBACH! Raffael has been causing the City backline all sorts of problems with his pace and direct running. This time Otamendi makes an awfully clumsy challenege and the referee points to the spot after consulting the officials behind the goal.
  • 15'

The game is just beginning to settle down after a frentic opening quarter of an hour. David Silva is looking extremely lively in these early stages and is starting to pull the strings in behind Sergio Aguero.
  • 13'

You suspect if the game continues to be this stretched it will suit City's superior attacking talent. That said, Demichelis and Otamendi have looked less than comfortable so far against the pace that Gladbacj possess.
  • 11'

This match has begun in a very open fashion, it's end-to-end at the moment. On this occasion it is City's turn to counter with David Silva finding time to turn in the middle of the park. The Spaniard finds Raheem Sterling who cuts inside from the left but his curling shot is well blocked.
  • 9'

WIDE! From City's own corner Gladbach launch a very dangerous counter attack with a two-on-two situation arising with Hermann being played in down the left hand channel. The centre forward's low shot beats Joe Hart but also goes just past the post.
  • 7'

Pellegrini may argue that it was a fantastic save from Sommer but in truth the Swiss goalkeeper should never have had a prayer. Kolarov is getting forward whenever he can in these early stages and looks like a useful outlet for the visitors.
  • 5'

SAVE! Massive chance for Aguero but he can only strike it straight at Sommer from inside the six yard box. He simply has to score from there. Kolarov had played Sterling in down the left wing and the winger had put it on a plate for the usually predatory finisher. Huge let off for the home side.
  • 3'

SHOT! First effort of the night is from Raffael but the striker can't keep his shot down. Gladbach cut through City's midfield far too easily and went straight at the heart of their defence.
  • 1'

Dominguez gives the ball away rather nervously which allows Manchester City the opportunity to pop it around for the first time this evening. Kolarov was quick to bomb forward on the overlap but the move eventually breaks down.
  • 1'

Gladbach get us underway in what could be a pivotal match in Group D!
  •

The atmosphere here in Germany is absolutely electric. The home supporters are creating an incredible amount of noise as kick-off approaches. Gladbach will play in all black, while City are in their away strip of bright yellow.
  •

Manuel Pellegrini will be desperate for three points tonight to get City's European campaign up and running after losing to Juventus at the Eithad Stadium on matchday one. Hart and Silva were badly missed at the weekend, it is certainly an evening for the big names to stand up and be counted. One name on the Gladbach bench that will be familiar to British football fans, Chelsea one's at least will be Thorgan Hazard, of course the brother of Eden.
  •

Argentines Nicolas Otamendi and Martin Demichelis continue in the centre of defence despite their woes during the 4-1 defeat to Tottenham over the weekend. Manuel Pellegrini has little choice - with Vincent Kompany and Eliaquim Mangala still missing. Willy Caballero makes way for Joe Hart, while Fernando gets swapped out for David Silva.
  •

Former Arsenal man Harvard Nordtveit is the only change in Wolfsburg's XI from their victory over Stuttgart in the Bundesliga last time out. He's replaced by Alvaro Dominguez in defence. It's a two-man attack for the hosts, with Lars Stindl and Raffael partnered up top.
  •

Man City subs: Caballero, Zabaleta, Maffeo, Evans, Fernando, Barker, Navas.
  •

Man City (4-2-3-1): Hart; Sagna, Demichelis, Otamendi, Kolarov; Toure, Fernandinho; De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling; Aguero.
  •

Gladbach subs: Nordtveit, Drmic, Hazard, Traore, Schulz, Hahn, Heimeroth.
  •

Gladbach (4-4-2): Sommer; Korb, Christensen, Dominguez, Wendt; Hermann, Dahoud, Xhaka, Johnson; Stindl, Raffael.
